Just curious if anyone other than me never knew that there was once a 24 ga. shotgun ??? I was cruising the net this morning looking for ammo and came across a site that has 24 ga. shotgun ammo. Learn something new every day.

That is a new one for me.

I have never seen one, but my Dad had told me about one that he had shot when he went dove hunting in Argentina. They are, apparently, not uncommon down there.

Never heard of it either. All i have know is 410, 28, 20, 16, 12, and 10

I did some more research and there is also a 14 gauge. The surprising part to the 24 ga. was that this company actually had 24 ga. ammo in stock.

Midwayusa typically has 24 and 32 gauge in stock.

Another cool fact is that the gauge number is equal to the number of round lead balls it would take to equal a pound.

Example:
In a 12 gauge it would take 12 lead balls the diameter of the barrel to equal one pound.
It would take 20 lead balls to equal one pound if they were the diameter of a 20 gauge barrel... and so on

There are a lot of old shotgun gauges that have gone obsolete. As already noted there used to the a 14 ga, a 32 ga and even an 11 ga. You can still buy ammo for some of them all through some specialist sites. There is a pretty cool video on youtube of Larry Potterfield of Midway USA loading up some ammo for an 11 gauge Parker. He started with brass 12 gauge shells and trimmed them down to fit. I found it interesting.

I think you can still buy a new 24ga in some countries.

In Europe 24 and 32 ga. were common until the 1980s.
I have a nice 32 ga. SxS that I shot lots of quail with.

A 24 gauge would fit nicely between a 28 and a 20 gauge.

In early 20th century America Most folks made do with what they had and a 12 gauge served it up from ducks,deer and turkey to rabbits, quail and squirrel.

Europeans were a bit more refined and matched the gauge to the quarry a lot more closely.

A trim 24 gauge double sounds like a pretty sweet piece
