I was laid off at 57. It's how I wound up in Alabama. If I had known how cheap it was to live here, I would have moved years ago. Now I play the Corporate game and have my career on cruise control for 3 more years. Good luck with the new company. It's hard to change, but you can do it.

I lost my job in 2009 at age 51. The prospect of finding a new job at that time was very bleak. It took me 6 months and I only landed a new job by networking with people I already knew. Bypassing the HR departments.

So be grateful you have a new position at a new company with an increase in pay. If it is not what you like, it is always better to look elsewhere when you are actively employed.

I left my job of 9 years about 3 weeks ago. Just don’t need the stress of oil and gas along with being at the office away from family. It was weird not setting the alarm and not being in traffic. My only job for the next year or so is finishing my masters and finding a less stressful career. I’ll start looking for a job in about a year. My wife calls me her trophy husband. Can’t wait to be on the boat or in the marsh anytime I want.

It’s weird to me that at your age you’re seeing or feeling age discrimination...by most folks clocks, you have over 10 years working years left and rarely do people stay places that long anymore. Makes zero sense to me to not hire someone in their 50’s. I can however see Stub’s perspective at 62, that’s different but still against the law.

The best increases in pay happen when you leave one job for another. As a college professor once told me, don't think of yourself as being paid for what you do. Think of yourself as being paid not to do it for someone else.

I also remember reading a report many years ago that found not taking more risks is what people approaching retirement regretted most.

I know what you mean. I worked for an outfit like that, once. It wasn’t fun, and like you, I still have not so fond memories about it. Thing is, it made me a far better hand than I would be, today, without that experience. It also helped me to not be that kind of manager.

Super, I'm headed to the same boat, and I'm 57. All I can say is I feel for the young people just starting out in the world finding themselves competing with our group. We're salty and hungrier because we see the endgame. You got this.

Best of luck! I've been in this boat. I was 54 when I was laid off at the end of 2017 by NRG after working in IT for the electric utility industry for 31 years. I naively thought I'd have no problems. I was getting a decent severance, the job market was very good, and I thought my 31 years of experience would count for something. What I found was that the influx of Indians into IT had driven salaries down to 1/2 of what I made. That companies outright discriminated against me due to my age. It took me 5 months and over 500 applications to finally land an offer. I'm at Raytheon now and while still a Project Manager, technically I'm not even in IT anymore but Supply Chain. I lost a good chunk of my salary too but thankfully not near as bad as some of the positions I had applied for. Fortunately they value my work and my salary after a little over 2 years is approaching what it had been. While I still puke everytime I see Michael McConnaghy doing a Reliant commercial - I'm proud to be working for a company that gives our war fighters the tools they need to thrive and survive.

Funny thing is, I figured going to Raytheon a 70,000 employee company and $30 billion a year in revenue I'd be safe from the constant corporate mergers I had dealt with for 30+ years, nope. We merged with another even bigger company (now about $200 billion in revenue and 200k employees) but so far things haven't changed much. If it can tie me over till I retire I'll be happy.
