I had a last minute change to my elk hunting plans that made it so I would GREATLY benefit from having an ATV. the hunt is 10 days, and 'I certainly dont need an ATV the other 355 days a year, so buying one seems ridiculous. Rentals seem outrageously priced ($250+/day), and usually are a no-go on interstate travel, and availability on renting one in CO is difficult to say the least, and usually pricier still. Anyone know a guy who'd take $4-500 to borrow a 4-wheeler for a week and a half? Id be happy to provide any sort of identification or anything like that asked. Hell, I'd let them keep a couple guns as collateral if they had an LTC until I brought it back. I know its a stretch, but Im trying to find an outside the box, last minute solution to save myself about 2 hours of sleep and 6 miles of walking (per day).

the best way to see an ATV damaged or mechanically disabled is to borrow one.

Roughneck, you're a grown man. You make your own decisions and do what you think is best. Personally, I think you're headin' for buyin' a broke down used ATV you hadn't planned on.

Nailed it.

Stuff breaks.
It always seems to wait to break until I borrow it - it's not from abuse as I am well past the balls to the wall stuff.
Then it ends up costing a lot of money because I fix it right.

Been there, done that, and spent $2000 fixing it. Wont borrow one again.

I borrowed a motorcycle one time, the carb clogged up 8 miles back in the NF. I got to push it out and pay to replace carb....

Next time I'll take horse or llama. If a horse or llama goes down, it's easier to shoot and write a check. No environmental regs either.

I like BOBO's answer. I just don't like borrowing higher prices items (tractors, vehicle, utv, 4 wheelers) because if it breaks in my possession, I'm gonna fix or have it fixed and my experience is even though I do not work hard borrowed stuff, it may break. If I can't rent it (I know still can be responsible on break downs on rentals) then I'm doing something else and might just have to walk. Cheaper to rent a horse and cowboy even for the week !

buy a decent used 4 wheeler, take it and use it, then come home and sell it.

Buy one. You'll be glad. I never knew how much use and enjoyment I would get from a good ATV. I bought a Foreman two years ago, never looked back. Buy a Honda, keep it a year and sell it if you want. On short notice, I'd avoid used. You don't want the worry of a break down on an unfamiliar machine.

My buddy just bought a new Foreman. 0% interest for a year.

Im attempting to go that route currently. Pretty slim pickings at the moment in the used ATV market. Im guessing a lot of people have used them more that usual this year with so many indoor sources of entertainment closed.

Horses are my backup plan, but they are a hell of a lot more work that a four-wheeler lol.

Check FB marketplace...a lot of nice used Honda wheelers for under $3k. Use for a week then come home and sell and probably get all or most of your money back.

I borrowed a tractor 3 times. First time the slip clutch on the shredder went out. Second time the starter went out, third time it ran low on water and got a little warm.

To be fair it was an OLD tractor that had been sitting for YEARS before it was put back into use and the owner was present and operating it for most of these issues, but still feel bad about it.

I have a friend I’ll loan just about anything to. It’s in his nature to break everything so I expect it. The only thing he hasn’t tore up is the old 7.3 and he bent the bumper on it clipping the gooseneck. Point is [censored] happens. Always.

If you’re in a position to buy new that would be the route I would take. A basic Honda Rancher will work for years and years and cost less than $200/month. People get caught up on buying expensive bikes with big motors. Truth is a 400-500cc bike with a 5 speed will do any work anyone ever wants to do and run 50mph. Everything else is sport and bragging rights. I put over 5000 miles on my rancher without any real issues.

Its not a financial thring against buying new, it just seems like a foolish thing to do to use it two weeks a year. It'll literally sit for the other 11.5 months a year.

Yup. What he said. When I bought mine, in 2018 it was a 2016 model that the dealer hadn't been able to move for two years. Foremen 500, 4 x 4, manual shift, straight axle, camo with electric power steering. If I had it to do all over again I wouldn't change a thing. I like the manual shift for a lot of reasons. It'll definitely do 50 mph, but it rarely sees over 30. When I pull or drag heavy loads, no problem. Equipped the way it is it will be dependable for a very long time. The only option is the electric power steering which is great when you have a rifle in one hand and need to steer through deep mud. What I most agree with Hudbone on is the size. It's plenty of machine, with a whole lot of models "bigger" than this one. But, even with 4WD there will be times you get in a tight spot and need to lift it out of hole, or reposition it on your trailer and have to manually push it around. It can be done. When it comes to off road stuff, the biggest isn't always the best choice. I just got back from Colorado, wife and I put at least 100 miles on it, at high altitude. Ran great and did all we needed it to do.

I just don’t like borrowing. It seems anytime I have it was perfectly fine til I use it then it breaks. I’ll fix it but in the long run it cost me more.

Lying is lying. Don't bitch about one doing it and condone another. That's called hypocrisy.
