What's your plan?
Last weekend (9-5) I brush hogged my three food plots. This weekend 9-12) I am spraying them all to kill all the weeds.
Next weekend (9-19) I'm plowing everything up. Then depending on rain forecast either on (9-26 or 10-3) i'm planting.

I shredded then plowed all mine up in early July. Then redisc them in late August and pull a drag over them to smooth them out. Finally got some rain on them and now waiting to see how much weeds/grass I get coming back..then decide on spray or run a shallow disc with a drag over them. I won't plant till first week of October down here due to heat and army worms.

I mowed and disced mine a month ago. Disced again this past weekend. I will plant the first week of October as well.

Mowed mine and will drill sometime soon, depending on rain. Last year I planted and didn’t gat rain for 6-7 weeks but didn’t have the drill so I had tilled and broadcast seed. Nothing like a big dirt patch for the first month of season.

I didn’t need to mow since I have the drill, but figured mowing would allow the new plants a decent amount of sunlight, but more importantly gives the deer an easy view to the feeders and makes them
Less weary to come in.

I ran the shreader on mine weekend before last. I don't have a disc, I drop the tines on my box blade, not the best but works for the most part. Will get a disc one of these days but my plots are pretty small, altogether maybe 2 acres.

I even got some rain, little shower as soon as I got the tractor on the trailer and was driving out. In this heat with a little moisture doesn't take long for plants to break through the ground.

I may have got a second rain shower. When I came back in the next day water was standing in the road in a place or two.

Last year the hogs rooted up a lot of my seeds, maybe this year they won't.

Thanks, Billy

I shredded all our plots back in mid/late Aug.

I will be heading to the Freestone county lease Thursday afternoon and plowing Friday, then hoping to plant on Sat. and lightly disc over to the top to cover the seeds ... start praying for rains. MLD3 season opens Oct. 3, so wanting to get things done to allow a little time to settle down.

I will do the same thing at the Burnet county place over the next few weeks into mid Oct based on rain projections there.

Ran the shredder over mine in Aug. Walked it yesterday and already have some of last years plot seeded sprouting with these recent rains.

I put a few plots in early, took a chance based on rainfall. Got 5" post planting, so some seed might have washed out. It looks like it will be cool for the next 10 days so fingers crossed. Will plant other plots around October 1. Also switched to organic fertilizer, smells horrible. Priced same as chemical fertilizer, less risk of burning new growth etc.

These guys showed up, I guess they like the freshly turned soil. Shot one every night after working the ground.

Why would you bother spraying a week before plowing? Seems like you'd be wasting your money unless you can't get a very good plow-job.

I have always sprayed a week before plowing and everything is dead when I do plow........Hey, if I'm doing it wrong, I'm always open for suggestions, won't hurt my feelings
and I don't mind learning other or better ways of getting it done.

Where is this? I looked in some coastal last week and didn't see any, had them thick last year, same spot.

Did talk to a buddy south of Hico Tx, seeing them there as of early last week.

Here is one that i have been working on. IT is on a transmission line R-O-W, virgin ground that has never been planted but has recieved herbicide treatments over the years. I started by brushhogging the goatweed and grass. We decided to use a moldboard plow first. One, it will breakup the hard pan. Two, it will bring in some fresh nutrients to the seedbed.

My next step is to run a disk harrow thru to pulverize and even out the seedbed.

3 bottom plow needs a heavy tractor , HP probably less important than traction.

Got mine in the ground yesterday. 200 lbs of 13-13-13 per acre, and about 100 lbs per acre of wheat-oats mix. only plant about 13 acres.

have tractor loaded and will be heading to the Fairfield lease later today. Have 5-7 plots of various sizes to plow tomorrow morning, head to town to get seed/fertilizer (oats & wheat) and corn, top off and fill feeders tomorrow afternoon (only have 1 running at each stand currently), son & grandson coming tomorrow evening and we will plant Sat. morning/drag in, then a few things around camp that need attending and putting one 4x6 stand back up that the wind took down last year. Should be a productive long weekend ... then just pray for rain.

Yep, rain is our issue. I got 5" after my early September planting, wondering how much seeds washed away...

put a couple hundred pounds of nitrogen yesterday on about 3 acres - here in North Texas;
gonna put out a hundred pound of oats later this evening, just in time for tomorrow morning's rain!
fingers crossed!
