Just a general wondering, I've hunted out at a friend's place in central Texas before, but him owning the land, we were able to hunt morning and evening. I didn't notice a big difference between the amount of birds flying other than they stopped around 10am and started again around 5:30pm. I've been looking at hunting some public land recently and keep wondering if I should go in the morning or in the evening (dont really have the time to sit around all day). Any experience having better luck either early or late in the day? Still pretty new

When I think of hunting dove in the mornings, I think of them coming from their roosts to the grain fields to eat. When I think of evening hunting, I think of sitting around a stock tank or watering hole and waiting for them to come in for a drink before going back to roost. If it has rained lately, then they can get a drink pretty much anywhere because of all the standing water, and therefore the evening hunting isn’t as good. If it hasn’t been raining and the ponds are the only place to get a drink, the hunting can be real good. This is my favorite type of dove hunting. The shots are pretty easy because they are coming in to land. If you have a dog, keeping them cool is very important during early September. Evening hunts over a pond are a perfect way to keep them cool because you can send them in the water to cool off.

When conditions are dry, my favorite is water hole hunting in the afternoon.

Gravel pits Or interior gravel roads can be good in the afternoon too when it’s been raining.

Early morning you for sure catch them flying into grain fields, but late morning you get them flying out of grain fields, and some coming and going. Afternoon, you get them coming and going, water tanks better at dusk. White wing better in the afternoon I think. But I normally have my limit by 8:30am, I stand at tree line, keep my eye peeled for them to come over the tree line and into the grain field, and I smoke'm.

Seeing something odd in Young County the last two weekends. Birds flying mid-afternoon, then shutting down 45 min - hour before sundown.

The last 30 min have always been when I have the best hunting, but something seems different this year.

A cousin of mine lives about 40 miles south of San Antonio and told me that he is seeing more birds in the evening. Lot of things can change that though.

Truth. Been hunting over fresh cut corn and have only killed 3 birds in probably 6-7 hunts.

I have been seeing the most activity (so like 2 birds ) around 4:30 - 6:30. Last hour of the day they seem to already be where they want to be.

I usually only hunt the evenings because I really like that time of day outside.

I've had better luck in the evenings and tend to hunt in the evening more on my property in Coleman County. On a paid hunt several years ago near San Antonio - the mornings is where all the action was. I think it really depends on the area.
