How do you preserve deer hides used for blood trail/ deer trail training?
Have a tri lacy pup from Amarillo headed to Baton Rouge next week. Will be getting her familiar with the scents and smells and mock trials this year and wasn't sure how to preserve the hide.
Thanks for the help, Rabbit

I would freeze them.
I trained my beagle to blood trail by using a treat broke into little pieces and drug along the floor worked up to blood i saved from deer and a leg bone i drug around. By no means am i a pro or even experienced per say but thats what i did and had success.

Freeze your deer hides. freeze your deer and pig blood all fall and winter so you will have blood to train your puppy. Forrest

Have you all tried salting and drying them out for use later ? Up here a salted hide will last almost forever without being tanned. I would salt it for a day, take off old salt then and salt again a couple more times then hang it up somewhere in shade or inside garage til it dries hard and flat. Once the moisture is out of the hide it should last a while.

Same, if you salt it good, it lasts about forever.
