depends on the area. I usually shred in mid-late August, plow & plant mid September out to mid Oct. Normally watch the weather forecast starting in early Sept. looking for one of the first cool fronts to push thru an area that shows to have decent moisture, plow & plant a few days to a week before it hits and pray for rain.

I usually do mainly oats (feed oats still get a good germination rate). I usually toss in some blackeyed peas around the edges. On my place in Burnet county (wildlife management improvement exemption) I do blended seeds per the recommendation of the biologist. Oats, triticale, peas, clover, turnip, wheat, hairy vetch, barvetch, chicory, milo mix and pumpkin. On the place in Fairfield (sandy), we did several plots in oats and one in wheat that all came up and produced well with the rains hitting shortly after planting and then continued every week or so for the next couple of months. We also put out 13-13-13 fertilizers on a couple to see if it made a difference, which is did and we will be doing that on all this coming fall. We really need to get several soil samples from the various plot locations, just never thought about it the right time.

I am in Goliad County. I usually shred about now and then disc up my plots to bank some moisture it if it rains. I usually wait till first week of October to plant due to heat and army worms. I have planted TAMU oats and mixed winter pea the past few years. This year I am going to seed in some Hubam an/or Madrid clover with it. If I can find some leftover cowpeas I have mixed them in my fall plantings in the past...great for archery season buck traffic...just have to make sure you don't get an early frost.

I plant wheat in mid to late September. I'm in Stonewall county. I planted too early a few years ago and it came up great and then the army worms mowed it down.

Thank for everyone’s input,my lease is near Crockett and I assume the soil isn’t the greatest. This month I plan on getting a soil test and prep my food plot in September.

Has anyone used a blend from east Texas seed company?

Or the budget blend

Wheat, the first of October. The later the better because of army worms.

Do you put wheat on the same fields as sunflowers? I've heard it's difficult to do both effectively.

We have been planting the last week or so of September. I am starting to wonder if we should hold off until October so that you have lots of new shoots coming up opening weekend in November.

Any thoughts?

One field I do. After deer season I turn cows in on it and they eat it down and stir the dirt up and sunflowers come up in late spring.

If it looks like it may rain in the fall. This year, probably not.

Mid to late September depending on the weather. I mix oats and wheat together to get the advantages of both of them.

Mid to late Sept, wait on rain forecast. Even Oct is still waiting on rain will not hurt anything. Takes about 7-9 days for oats and peas to start coming up.

We do. Great success too. Stompy and southtex are correct about planting in October. Used to be we would plant September if rain was coming. Too hot these days, and army worms can wipe you out. Around 1st of October seems we get much better results.

Good to know. My intention was to plant a fall deer mix with native sunflowers mixed in come October 1st-ish. Then shred and disc them around January 15th. Try for the best of both worlds. It's my first time planting this particular plot, so we'll see how it goes.

I just planted a couple of food plots and they consisted of Winter Triticale, Austrian Winter Peas, Purple Top Turnips, and Crimson Clover. Hopefully, they're gonna be great and product plots. I planted them in the Flint Hills of Kansas about a week ago.

I am not trying to highjack this thread, just add to it. Every year for several years I had to buy a new sprayer for the foodplot from Tractor Suppy
or Atwoods. They cost me about $250-$300. They would only last for one year before something broke. And the tires contently went flat. They
could not hold the weight of the water in the tank while bouncing over a plowed field...25 gallons.
So, I made my own sprayer for $130 plus and it has lasted for 4 years now. And I am the worse person with a tool. If I can put this together, anyone can.

55 gallon plastic drum ... $15
two..six foot water hoses ... $10
two..four foot pvc pipe ........$8
two sprinkler head values....$4
a couple of other fittings .....$3
One 12v water pump from Norther Tool...$90

I already had the battery charger that I run it off.

I get it from Tractor Supply. I've used it for about 10 years now. Works great, but needs sun to kill. Takes about 5-10 days to wipe out everything,
depending on if you have sun or not..
This is the 2-1/2 gallon container that I use and last year was $42. Roundup was $99 for same amount.

Ever try this one? Grabbed it by accident. Has diquat added to roundup. It's supposedly better for immediate replant after use.

Where we hunt, we have to have all our work done before bow season starts. I do all mine in Sept. Last year I waited until the last weekend and didn't get everything done. I have all my plots done, finished last week end, all I need is rain on my pea patch.

Once we get into Oct./bow season we can only be on the lease between 12 and 2 pm to fill or feeders, Camera etc. I typically do not bow hunt but the last couple of weeks because of the heat. I have to many stump where my bow stand is, did two different types throw and grow. Will be interesting to see how throw and grow does compared to my cowpeas I put in with my tractor.

I think I have more fun trying to grow plots and messing with Cell Cameras than hunting LOL.

Thanks, Billy

Me too! I get more of a thrill seeing lots of game on the cameras and planting. I do it all to hunt, but enjoy the game management aspect a bit more than the actual hunt.
