The Aggies say hunt the fronts

Quote
Fitzsimmons said timing hunts around normal seasonal weather like cold fronts will be instrumental in hunter opportunities. Dove concentrate in bigger fall flights ahead of fronts.

“These groups will often feed heavily in one area for a few days before moving on,” he said. “Hunters should look to take advantage of any fronts during the season.”

Right now we have water everywhere, same goes for their food. We drove 15 miles out of town, did not see enough dove to justify going out to any of the local pastures I have access to.

I got some dove that are ripe in my fridge, aged a week, bout to throw them on the smoker. Then hit the sack and hopefully hammer some teal in the morning.

Below average here this afternoon. Stopped raining at 11am and saw plenty of doves right after that. But when we went out at 4pm they'd thinned out. I think they fed early today, right after the rain. We'll find out in the morning.

I've seen quite a few birds the latter part of this week here up N of DFW. More than I saw opening week.

The whole weekend was below average for dove due to this weeks rain. But the Teal hunting was phenomenal in parts of the flooded fields.

Not seeing many dove in the Leonard/ Wolfe City area. Very much below average so far. I’ve got a field that I left a strip of standing milo in hopefully that will help for late season

Went to Woodson today and saw 5 total dove after I left Graham. The lease was a ghost town. Zero dove.

Decent north wind here now, maybe that'll make something happen. Also drying up pretty good.

They were flying great in Throckmorton Sunday evening. Shame I can’t shoot better.

Drove through there yesterday about 3:00 and didn’t see anything, nor in Woodson, Graham, Murray. Did they start flying late? Is that a Charlie Rose-Wildrose Kenels (Seymour) GSP by chance?

They were flying in my sunflower field by 4:30. No, this dog did not come from that kennel.

Went to the farm Sunday p.m. to check on calves. Took my pointer and a shotgun.
Sat near a tank for a couple of hours, visiting with a friend and watching for birds.

We saw maybe 12.
I shot one time, dropped one bird - in the tank.

Here's where it gets good........Cookie couldn't stand seeing that bird floating out there in the tank so she launches out there, swims over and retrieves the bird for me.
She's always hated water.

I guess the drive to fetch that bird was more than she could stand.
She got a lotta lovin' for that retrieve.

banana
