Curious about proper shot placement on a buffalo (bison)? May have to shoot one and from the looks of them, the vitals may be moved around a bit from the normal deer, elk, hog type targets I'm more accustomed to.

Silver spurs and gold tequila

6 inches straight back from the eye.
I took my last cow bison with one shot through the shoulder joint. Went through shoulder joint and chest cavity lodging in opposite side just under the hide. The shot entered through the shoulder joint at the ball socket and destroyed it then past through the chest . Took out the lungs.
The shot behind the eye hits the neck and drops them like a rock, my 1st cow bison was taken with that shot.

Your diagram does not quite match up with the anatomy I found when dressing my cow, the shoulder joint shot hit chest cavity. Avoid the hump, nothing there is fatal.
They may take a lung hit a run a ways but it will kill them quite dead.

In the last two years, my friends have taken a half dozen. Their advice is just below and behind the horns (like WyTex said) or just behind the point of the elbow for heart/lung. Try to imagine without all the hair on the front and picture where the body really would be.

Never seen an animal survive the above shot placement with an appropriate calibre and bullet.

I hunted big shaggies as I call them in Wyoming back in 2015. One of the funnest hunts I've ever been on. I actually worked my but off to get the shot. We were shown the photo below for shot placement before the hunt. Just before I pulled the trigger the guide said aim line eyes to butt hole. I moved my crosshairs up a tad and touched the trigger. He walked three paces and dropped. Since I wasn't going to have the bull mounted I went for a two year old bull as the meat is much more tender as we were told. They told us the older bulls usually get ground into hamburger as that's about all you can use the meat for.

As a side note the guide said absolutely no Remington Core-Lok bullets on the hunt. They actually inspected our rifles and rounds before the hunt. Before the hunt trying to read up and study Buffalo hunts I came across the statement about the Core-Lok bullets a bunch more times. Apparently they perform very poorly on big shaggies. I used a custom LH Win Model 70 .300 WSM with 180gr Barnes Triple Shock bullet. The shot was 195 yards

Distance is not an issue, but the wind can make it interesting!

Reminiscent of where you shoot African game. Their vitals are a bit more forward and lower than whitetails or elk.

Shot my cow a few years ago right behind the ear. Dropped like a rock and zero meat destroyed. Second one I have shot this way.
Used a 45-70 Shilo Sharps.

Yes it was great folks and a great place to hunt if you can get drawn. Prices have really increased since I hunted.
