Went to sit in a deer blind hoping the hogs would show up....no hogs but a few bucks made an early appearance. The one who has shed his velvet was the first one here to shed about 2.5 weeks ago now. The others are shedding summer hair so they won't be much longer till the strip the velvet off.

You need to remove the rust and repaint your T posts.

Very nice. Haven’t been seeing any pigs lately either.

I think the hogs are protesting the rusty T-posts.

They are a random show...no set hour or pattern here...other than when the neighbor is out on his place the hogs are on my place.

We used to be covered up in pigs on this place, I’ve probly trapped over 100 just in box traps and shot Lord knows how many, but they changed patterns last year. Have only seen 2 so far this year, and very little sign. I’m the main one that puts pressure on them between trapping and shooting with night vision. I didn’t even hunt this place last year because I was overseas working, even with less pressure they still went elsewhere. I know that’s what pigs do, but we all like shooting and eating them so I hope they make a comeback. Same thing with the turkey here, will go years & years without seeing any and then they’re back all of a sudden. I’m looking forward to turkey season this year. Have a bunch of big birds living right by the camphouse. All you have to do is do a little shredding and they come out right behind you.

I'd like to quantify what changed so they left; you lost me at "I hope they make a comeback", and there were 25+ turkeys hanging out where our gray water from the washing machine dumps out in front of the house (and the grass is green) the other day. 'Gonna have to finally shoot a hen this fall and fry her up. We'll see if it's any more tender than a gobbler.

I do think pigs move with the water and abundance or lack of rain. 'Dries up and they're gonna migrate to live water, be it creek, river, etc. Especially with a little pressure. I'd be just fine if they left my place forever, but that's not gonna happen.

I have worked on hogs since I bought my place in 2012...I have taken 98 off of here from 2012 till 2019..a lot the first two years then as few as 3 some years. They moved out to the farmland areas to my northeast and south...and back to the river farms to my north. Last year the numbers took off for some reason and I had a hard time getting control of them. I have taken 31 yr to date and that group of 8 in those pics is the left overs from that large number from early this year. I killed the last 2 adult sows from that group in the pics above and most of the remaining ones are boars..with a couple of younger sows. I make it a point to shoot a sow when I can first then whatever I can after that. It would not hurt my feelings I never saw a hog or turkey again. grin

I know it sounds crazy and do b**** when running over rooted up ground, but everyone on this place would rather eat pork vs deer and I do love deer meat.
I don’t know what made them leave. We have 2 big tanks with water, 7 (soon to be 8) feeders that run year round, and lots of thick cover on ~650 acres in the brush country. No idear...

High fence, low fence, no fence, it really doesn't matter as long as you're hunting!

Lol, everyone here complains about the corn buzzards too but I don’t mind feeding them. Something different to hunt and I do like eating them. Plus the kids otta get a kick out of seeing and shooting them. These birds have one little area they like to hang out in and have never seen them anywhere else. I did a little scouting in that area yesterday and I’m thinking about putting another feeder up there. Gonna call it the turkey feeder.

That first pic is something I haven’t ever seen before. Velvet, no velvet, summer coat, and winter coat, all in one shot. Very neat.

If I could have gotten 3 does that were outside of the feeder pen in the pic you would have had those 3 bucks plus a doe in summer, a doe in full fall coat and a doe that was partially in summer and fall. For bucks it is usually a small window of about 3-4 days when they will shed the summer coat, put on the fall coat and then they strip the velvet. That buck that has shed his velvet did it back on the 24th of Aug.
Thanks everyone.

Great pics of some good looking deer and some good eating size pork.
