Checked this week, and I see few to no acorns. The ones I do see are tiny and location dependent.

I hope there is zero acorns this year after the deluge last year

So far this year I have not seen any on the live oaks here...first time in 3 yrs now I have not seen any. I am sure though with all the live oaks I have that there will be a few somewhere I have walked in to look at. I have one live oak right beside the barn that has had acorns every year since 2013...it has none on it this year.

None on the live oaks, but pin oaks are contributing. Colorado Co.

My red oaks are dropping them prematurely and the elms are already loosing their leaves.

Walter, I’m seeing a very few at my place South of Bowie. Last year I had so many it sounded like I was walking on bubble wrap. Also, the corn piled up under the feeders. Not even hogs or crows messed with it.

There is a trade off involved. With very few acorns, I see a lot more deer at feeders. However, with acorns, I know that the deer will be a lot healthier.

Its a little early for me to even look to see what stage the acorns are. They will start showing up in another month or longer.

Thanks, Billy

I just went and check the oak tree in my front yard, the ground was covered last year, but no acorns this year. And I give it a good soaking every few weeks.
I'll have to look at the ranch. Last year there were so many acorns that you could not see the ground under some of the oaks

Few if any here. Last year they covered the ground. 2018 none. 2017 everywhere. Seems to be an every other year cycle here.

Took pictures of the acorn crop today and this Burr Oak is loaded. Hoping they drop early so the deer will hit the feeders when it gets cooler. [Linked Image]

Not trying to be a smart azz, but what you have pictured is a member of the red oak family, and burr oak is a white oak.

You may call that a burr oak, but it isn’t.

General rule of thumb: red oak has pointy leaves, white oaks have rounded leaves. Red oaks produce every year, with some years being bumper crops but they are less desirable for wildlife due to high tannin content that takes a while to diminish once on the ground. White oaks produce usually every other year and are highly desired by wildlife once in the ground.

I haven’t had a real good year of White Oak acorns in a number of years, even in years of good rain. I have wondered why. As Texas Buckeye said, the sweet edible white oak acorns are highly desirable to the wild critters, compared to bitter red oak acorns.

I believe in north Texas/southern OK we had a bumper crop Of the white variety. There were so many acorns on the ground deer really didn’t need to travel far to eat. Made hunting difficult if your place is like mine and there are 50 white oaks every half acre.

I expect to see some acorns this year but hopefully not like last years crop.

I was just going by the TAG that was on them when we purchased them and planted them. I thought White Oaks only produced every other year (at least that is what our do) and this one is loaded every year. Don't really care what they are, the deer like them and they produce every year and have already started dropping. They have always started dropping in early September.

OR, thats why I said I wasn't trying to be a smart butt. You are correct, reds produce every year and white usually every other.

My reds in my yard have decent acorns this year and had exceptional last year.

If you know the deer like them, then use that to your advantage for sure. Set up around that tree and you will be in good shape, but they may be all gone by the time season starts too.

You never know what tree you get when you purchase from a nursery, same with tomatoes and pepper plants. We planted some at the house and were I hunt and they all look and produce the same. My wife though it was a cute name for the trees so we bought some. Thankfully where I hunt it is Archery Only so I have that going in my favor. I didn't think you were trying to be a smart butt and hopefully I didn't come across that way. Ready for come cooler weather to go and scout some more.
