There’s been a few recent threads either here or the trading forum about ole 30-30

I've never lost a deer I hit with my 30-30.

223 fo sho. Unless you have a basass tracking dog, anyway. I know an old dude that lost multiple deer, multiple years in a row with one and he's still using it.

22 Hornet, although it is my favorite squirrel gun. I think of many worse than the 30-30.

Every caliber can be the worst with the incorrect bullet construction.

Add shot placement to that and I will agree.

Generally speaking any caliber the hunter cannot place the bullet where it needs to be for a clean quick kill. I do not care if that is anywhere between a 22 Hornet and 460 Weatherby.

Some people get their rifle out the night before the season opener. They do not shoot during the year, do not prepare by understanding distance, shooting ergonomics, etc. Some believe if "I can hit a 9" pie plate at 50 yards, I'm good to 100.". Then blame the rifle/cartridge combination. The "failure" of a caliber/cartridge has more to do with the failure of the shooter to prepare.
The few critters I've lost over the last 50 years were not lost because of caliber but lost because the projectile wasn't properly placed.
Early on (teen years) I learned about bullet construction. 30-06/125 combination didn't work well. Bullets came apart, multiple shots to dispatch. Next, Nosler solid base 150s in the same 30-06 failed in similar fashion.
It's not the caliber that fails the shooter but the inverse.

Betting 30-30 has taken more big game in the U.S. than any other caliber.

Classy. Classic. Proven. Inexpensive. Plus, you get bonus points for owning a fine lever gun.

(I've never owned a 30-30 btw. Decided to go one better 30 years ago with the .35 Rem)
