October 01, 2020 moving from Central Texas to Sherman Tx area. I will be transferring my VA medical care to the Sherman facility. My care is through the Maroon Team at the Temple VA. If anyone has any info on a Sherman Primary Care Physican to request there or any other info on this facility I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks

Let me talk to some people and I will send you a PM Don. I have two grandparents in the area but neither are VA. I am not VA but this area lacks that so you may have to go to Frisco/Prosper area. Let me talk to the grandmaws Sir.

I use the VA clinic in Sherman. Very nice facility and responsive staff.
Going east to Bonham, TX. approx 20 miles is a VA hospital also.

The Sherman VA is a typical CBOC site, located in a shopping center in front of the Pet's Mart. Very Good people too. Tell Christy hello for me, Ron V.
We moved down here to Palestine from Lake Texoma in April of 2016. Bonham's setup is also a
"local" CBOC clinic & offers small #'s of other services, relying on Dallas VA for anything more serious. Bonham is also where the Dallas VA shuttle is based. Good Luck in Dallas.

From where we lived at Texoma, 1/2 way out on the Peninsula around the corner from the TX Game Wardens HQ & the Elks Club , and knowing what to expect in Dallas with my medical history, today I'd of registered in Oklahoma City, IF I had only known what I was going to go thru in Dallas.

I grew up in Dallas not far from the Dallas VA, and at 5 years old ,can still remember my father driving thru the temporary Quonset Hut Village where the baseball field is today in 1947 checking on "his" pilots before he was killed in an air to air collision while leading a squadron of P-51's thru a major thunderstorm in August 1948.

At the time of our move from Lake Texoma 6 years ago, my oldest son's wife was fighting cancer bigtime, she'd had 13 major surgeries in 6 years, and passed in Nov of 2016 before the last scheduled surgery that was set for Jan of 2017, they lived in North Dallas or later some of the small northern suburbs, so we came south to get me into Temple even though it's a 285 mile round trip from Palestine. ..anything to get me out of Dallas VA's service area. ...and provide a place for my DinL to rehab.

Temple, 40 miles south of Waco is where Baylor, Scott & White's Hospital System is headquarter'd is 6 blocks away and within sight of the
VA Olin Teague Hospital. I'm told all or most of the VA specialty doc's actually work for B,S&W and office & teach their specialty to VA docs at Olin Teague. I know my Glaucoma surgeon does this. Dallas VA uses UT Dallas for the same thing, but is 15+ miles away near Love Field.

Pre the Covid nitemare the local Palestine CBOC had a very reliable no cost shuttle, and will again I expect....and it was common to see the guys from the Bonham shuttle get jacked around and missing Appt's schedules like yesterdays news and why I drove 135 miles one way thru downtown Dallas traffic, usually with both eyes dilated or jacked up on pain pills in 40+ miles of rush hour traffic to get north of McKinney.

FWIW, In May of 2016 on our first trip to Olin Teague 10 days after we'd moved to Palestine, our 1st appt was taken by the Temple VA's Director of Opthamology, and the 2nd follow up appointment 5 days later was taken by the Chief of Opthamolgy of B,S&W. who was really PO'd at the guy he had trained to replace himself, but had taken the same position at Olin Teague instead . It's a very tight group of great Dr's. ...and 6 years later I keep trying to get my wife to agree to move to Lake Belton like I wanted originally but could not find a house we could afford fast enough, just outside the boundary of Ft Hood.
Good Luck, Ron

Whatever happened to the original Reba McIntyre Hospital out on the west side of Denison? I was told that the Operating Suite had been already updated and totally renovated, before the new hospital was built. I always believed that it could have been used by the VA to expand the services offered locally and eliminate some of the need of the trip to Dallas or OKC. What a waste of an opportunity to better serve the Vet Community.
US Representative Colin Allred found a shuttered but still serviceable hospital in Garland and pushed it thru the necessary updating and renovation, taking some of the load off VA Dallas, and my hat is off to him for that.

I have been in Sherman area for a year now. No complaints on the Sherman VA Clinic. I have been scheduled for appointments to Dallas VA and I basically refused. I request Community Care and usually approved via TriWest. I have to venture to Bonham soon to order some new eye glasses. For what it's worth, I was treated at the Temple VA facility for 7 years. Had a couple of medical issues they got me through and I never had any problem with them.

Don, the wife & I have been talking lately as we've lost several old friends recently, about the inevitable and where probably she would wind up when I'm gone. The wife does not have anywhere close to the medical issues I have, that have been treated mainly by VA Dallas for over 10 years before we moved out of their Service Area. I was not surprised when she said she would most likely would not stay here in Palestine since we are a long way from being able to pay off this house that was bought in 2016, but would move back north of DFW to get closer to our two son's, who live either in Frisco, or South Lake and would look for something small enough for just her north of those 2 towns that she could pass along to one of them.

Lately she has begun to have some eye issues and I brought up "who was the guy in Sherman who did your cataract surgeries ?" So she had to think about it for a moment but here is her eye doctor's name and a strong recc from her on this guy, "RGB Eye Asssociates", Dr Robert Burlingame. I wish I had been able to use him instead of VA Dallas's nightmare of services that has left me almost totally blind in my left eye.

I had had a home accident and had a piece of metal penetrate my left eye some years before I got into the VA. I wound up using a new Dr at Dr Henry Gelander's Cornea Associate of Texas who was not of the same quality as any of the Partners or Dr Gelander himself, and was let go shortly after his work on me from injuries in a car wreck. Dr Gelander is or was the Vice Chair of Opthamology at Presbyterian Hospital of Dallas and has an extensive resume of teaching Cornea Replacement surgery in more than a few places in the world. During the transition from Private practice to VA Dallas Tricare decided not to pay for my eye meds, and subsequently severely damaged the 1st donor cornea. VA Dallas use's UT S'West Dr's for specialty work. PM me anytime about my experiences with UT Texas's specialty Docs FWIW donor Cornea's are graded on a letter system as to the quality of the donor cornea, and cornea's only have useful life of about 8 years max for Grade A material.

I'll leave anymore public comment for a PM if you want more info...but suffice it to say...VA Dallas's quality of work in more than one issue was the over riding reason I moved into Temple VA's service area, and the Chairman of Opthamology @ Baylor Scott & White who examined me in Temple had a comment I've never heard from any Dr on any subject before that he had never seen an Optic Nerve before that looked like a burnt match and wanted to know name of the Dr who had left me like that.

PM me your phone number if you need to talk to me. In closing, be sure to get 2nd opinions outside whenever possible if you have any anxiety about a procedure at VA Dallas & be sure to make a friend downstairs at the Patient Complaint Office who can give you a history of issues with a specific problem or person.

The plastic Surgeon Program docs' at VA Dallas get a hearty Hurrah JOB WELL DONE from me about doing the wonderful result's when the great plastic Surgeons at UT rebuilt my nose and the left side of my face from skin cancer. Trust me God did not put that healthy skin there. I just hope that program is still in existence.

Best of Luck
Ron
