Got a few pics of this buck and he's pretty poor. Thought he was just old and run down from the rut then I noticed his left front leg. Think he got hit by a rattle bug?

Either that or hung that front leg on the top wires of a fence he was trying to jump.

Fence not enough meat on the lower leg of a deer for a snake to go much damage

That looks like fence damage to me. See it a lot here with mule deer, but generally the back legs. Growing up, I spent a lot of time in South Georgia on the farm and we would see a lot of big snakes. Never really saw any limping or sick deer from snakebites, but the hogs kept the numbers down pretty good also. I have always heard that the deer can smell them pretty good, and avoid them. plus, there is very little muscle or blood vessels in the lower legs to get involved with a bite. Maybe hitting the leg bone convinces the snake to make it a "dry bite"???
