Is there a 22-250 round of 60 grain bullet or bigger that can be bought for use on deer? I have a Remington Model 700 BDL that I am going to let my step son use and I want the best round I can buy since I do not reload. Thanks in advance for any help.

It has to do with twist rate. The 22-250 on factory rifle, the twists are generally 1:12" or 1:14" twist, and will not stabilize the longer/heavier bullets.

Ok, I need to check serial number and see exactly what twist rate is on the 700 BDL that I have

Do you think a 60 grain would work ok?

Sierra 63gr SP are my go-to for deer in the 22-250s I've had. Load them up to around 3300 fps and they'll drop deer in their tracks. If it's a factory barrel, i'd venture to guess it's the 1:14 twist. The two Remington 700s I have are both the same twist. Since the 63gr Sierra bullets aren't really a high BC bullet, they'll stabilize just fine in the slow twist barrels.

The 63’s are what I used a lot in my 220. Last year, just to know if they’d stabilize, I tried 63 gr Sierras, 60 gr Partitions, 64 gr Nosler BSB, and 65 gr Sierra GK’s. I have a 20” barrel in 14 twist.

The 63’s did stabilize (they are the shortest bullets tried)
The 60 gr Partitions would not quite stabilize, but were close to it.
The 64 gr Nosler BSB would not stabilize, and some keyholed.
The 65 gr Sierra GK bullets went somewhere, but not into the big 100 yard target.

My thoughts: if I had a longer barrel and could push the Partitions faster, maybe they’d stabilize. It was real close to working in my rifle.

Chad beat me to it but check. Seems to make a bigger difference in 22-250 than 223 in my small experience. I had a savage factory 1:14 and could not get anything about 55gr to shoot well. A 52gr amax was the best for me.

I'm a dude who likes long barrels!

If it wont stabilize the longer/heavier lead core bullets, i would definitely give the barns vortex line of ammo a look. Hornady also loads some GMX and nosler E-tip bullets. Those three are all solid coper/guilding metal bullets that will penetrate well and with the velocity of the 22-250 should be a great combination.

Like they said. That 700 has a 24 inch barrel and might stabilize the Nosler Partition loads from Federal. My go to in a Ruger 77 Varminter with a 24 inch barrel was Nosler Solid base 60 gr bullet. Knot that bullet was stable out to 600 yards at least. Wish Federal still loaded the 55 gr Trophy Bonded bullet as it worked very well in m Sako 20 inch barrel.

I have used the 60gr Nosler Partition on deer before, with no complaints (from me anyway, the deer didn’t like them very much) As others have stated it will depend on whether your rifle likes them or not as I was using a 1:12 twist.

If you have a 1:14 you might try the 53 or 50 Barnes TSX

The 45 grain TSX shot better in my 1:14 .22-250 than the heavier TSXs.

Did the partitions key hole or just not shoot well??
