My nephew was slated to start the academy in May. It was already on hold before all the crazy because it was being investigated for teaching racist policies. When all this started and they started defunding they said that the academy was on hold indefinitely. So you've got a city that was already short on manpower and their academy is closed indefinitely. That city holds the state capital. Not that hard to see this coming.

Houston and their police under Acevedo have actually been holding there own, one of the few large cities with all Dems in charge that has not had out of control rioting. They seem to have adds recruiting for good police who have been defunded. Don't personally like the overall approach of Sylvestor, Hidalgo and crew...butthey are keeping it relatively safe so far

Logical is not correct when politics are involved. Anywhere else the county takes over if a local police force is disbanded.

Travis county SO probably doesn’t have enough man power to take care of what they’ve got, much less take over for APD.

Have you ever seen a pd the size of apd disbanded? Comparing a municipality of 2 officers is not a good comparison.

Based on the levels of authority of government, state, county, then city. Everything flows down hill from the state's powers. A good opportunity for the sheriff to create a bigger staff, in turn go to the county and ask for a porcelain pot full of money.

So you've not seen it done

The county sheriff is the county's top law enforcement officer, has jurisdiction over all of the area of the county, including inside of city limits. And it has happened in several small towns in Texas.

That's why legislation will need to be passed to pull this off.. basically turning Austin city limits into a state jurisdiction. I don't think it's been done before.. and I think the Sheriff would still have to sign off since he is the only elected LEO in the county.

I think the City of Austin should just hire a couple hundred social workers to answer calls like they want, what could possibly go wrong......

From 2000 to 2016 there were 25 towns that dismantled the police departments in the Panhandle, every county sheriff has had to take up the slack.

Quite a bit of difference between those little towns and Austin lol. We had 2 or 3 disband out this way, corruption is rampant in small towns just like big ones.

It is immaterial as to the size of town, the county sheriff is the top law enforcement officer, it is up to his staff to step up to cover local law enforcement.
