Rule #1 of hog hunting.

Always be ready for a follow up shot if a big hog is still kicking bc they will get up and run.

Good shooting, indeed!

If a hog is moving it's head around, then it definitely isn't dead yet. Dead hogs will kick and dry run, but they generally don't ever try to move their heads and particularly don't try to lift their heads. A head moving hog gets shot again.

True of all hunting. The fastest way to pay two trophy fees is to assume your first shot is lethal.

I re-learned this lesson a few weeks ago. Shot a big 'un; he dropped; I watched him through the scope for 5 or 6 minutes; started getting all my fecal material ready to get out of the blind; climbed down out of the blind; walked to where the "dead" hog was supposed to be: no hog! Lots of blood at the spot where I "killed" him, but no blood trail to follow. So, once again, I began giving all my "dead" piggies a quality assurance shot, no matter how dead they appear to be! They are some darned tough animals. I've killed some with only 3 legs; killed some with only one eye or one ear; I even killed one that had an arrow through his midsection!

Okay, there's a 50% chance that I really don't wanna know the answer to this, but, you gotta explain, exactly, what "material" you're talkin' about. laugh

Shot a big boar last year 70 yards with my 450 BM ,watched him kick for 3 or 4 minutes and he jumped up and took off. Big chunks of lung blowed 10 feet past where he was, trailed a solid blood trail till he went into a briar patch thicket, I don't think he went much further but it was dark by then soooo, the coyotes gotta make a living too

Don't know where I'm goin but I'm makin good time

I’ve had a couple come back from the dead. I usually park another bullet in them for insurance.

OK, this story makes me look like a dummy, but so be it. It was later afternoon, and I was going to my stand for the evening hunt with my bolt action gun. Long story, but the trail to my stand passed about 30 yards from the feeder. I could see a boar there already, which really surprised me. For safety, I load my gun after climbing my stand. I was so close I was really worried about taking too long to load. Besides, how could I miss from 30 yards? So I put one round in the chamber. This is east TX, a lot of brush. I couldn't quite get a good angle, but then I got a shot of his head from quartering toward me. Bam. He dropped like a rock. Did not move at all. Then, after what felt like minutes, but was maybe about 40 or 50 seconds, he jumped straight up as if he had not been injured and charged right toward me. Maybe 150 pounds. It was astonishing to see how fast he could move. About halfway to me, he veered off. Still, there I was like an idiot, with an unloaded gun. That one got me to seriously consider wearing a sidearm while hog hunting.
I'm not an expert, maybe one of the hog ballistics lethality experts could tell me if I am wrong, but I wondered if maybe I had shot high, and hit him in the top of the skull, so that the bullet hit hard enough to knock him out, but then skimmed off without penetrating. He literally did not twitch while lying there. It was dumbfounding how he then got up and was going full speed almost instantly.

Heck, I shot one in the face a couple of years ago. Maybe 40 yard shot. He jumped up in the air, spun like the Tasmanian Devil, and came right at me. Soooo da__ fast. Woulda had me, but he turned off just as he got close. I guess I blew off part of his face/snout. He was making some squealing racket.

Shot one in the head a few years earlier. I had my 220 Swift and 55 gr Nosler BTs. He was quartering away. The bullet struck behind the ear, best I can tell, but banked off like a cue ball. Big cloud of dirt instead of the red mist. He just shook his head and never slowed.

And, of course, I had several that looked seriously dead jump up and take off. That’s why I park another round in em. I will wait a bit with the crosshairs on them before I shoot again. If the twitching gets enthusiastic, Boom.

That’s why I stopped shooting the Vmax out of my 22-250. I shot a hog and missed his ear. I hit him right under the eye. When I poked his eye with the barrel he came back to life for A very short time. I switched to the 45gr TSX. That bullet doesn’t Slow down until it gets all the way through.

This was a 300 gr slug out of a 12 gauge at 50 yards. Tough SOB

It means getting one's $#1T together. "Fecal" is the kinder, gentlemanly word for it.

Creekrunner, I meant gathering all of my gear together and putting it in a small back pack that I carry with me. Kinda like gettin' my sh&t together.

Excellent
I have guided many that want to shoot and then stand their rifle up in the corner. Keep that rifle (shotgun) ready for the follow up.
Good job Sapper up
