I'm suprised at the level of agreement with the question "which 4x4 truck is best". I figured this question would have been an all out war! Lol. OP, you narrowed it down too much to get a good fight going! Talking compacts is very different than a full-size 3/4 or 1 ton truck.

Well, if it's a 1 ton Dodge dualley, you're required to put extenders on the outside wheels in the back and those spike wheel simulators on the front. Extra points for dual diesel stacks out the bed. And the mirrors are a whole 'nother subject.

It depends entirely on how you spec them out. The TDR Off-road will run circles around the base level Colorado or Canyon, even the Z71, but can't keep up with the ZR2, especially if you add the Bison package. Factory 2" lift, front and rear lockers, diesel engine, factory steel bumpers, rails and skid plates made by AEV - Toyota doesn't have anything that can compete.

My Tacoma TRD with 2 inch lift, factory installed rear locker with 4:10 gear ratio and front end ARB locker has a winch on the front that is used to get Chevys, Fords and even Polaris Rangers out of trouble.

I would go with the Tacoma. Had nothing but positive experiences with my Tacomas and now with my tundra.

I've been looking at a Toyota Tacoma myself here lately....Hard to argue against their off road capabilities and resale value...my only question is cab/comfort. Seeing that I'm pushing 6'4, how big are some of you guys that swear by driving Tacoma's? Seems like I've seen some relatively tall guys unfold out of the driver seat at some gas stations...

I'm 5'6 and 150 lbs and a tacoma feels cramped to me. I drove one for a few years in High School but after being in half tons and larger since then they are def. a step down in size. But, great little trucks.

Just thinking out loud.

A good friend of mine has abused one more then probably 99.99999 of tacoma owners. He has to replace front end every 40k.
With that said he is a houndsmen in NM and that truck is chasing cats or bears 365 days year in multiple states.
I don't think there is a tougher midsized truck that has proven to beat the tacoma yet in durability
He is 6’2, I'm 6, I don't feel cramped but it's no f250 cab, but it's sure more comfy on the back on dirt.
If I lived in mountains id be driving Long travel suspension taco

A Tacoma will be my next truck. Too bad my current 2010 Highlander only has 56,000 miles on it and is paid for!

Just thinking out loud. If i lived up in the mountains of New Mexico or Colorado and didn't have to make long highway trips like i do now, i would drive a double cab Tacoma short bed with 33's on it and be perfectly happy. The size difference between a modern day half ton and a 3/4 ton is minimal with a short bed on the 3/4 ton

I'd buy a littler truck, but the boat/tractor/flat bed etc. would mean i would have to borrow a truck regularly or have 2 and i dont want two.
