Seems like every time we pull the cards on our cameras we have pictures of dogs running around. They have collars but no tags, so no luck tracking down the owners that way. I wouldn't want anyone to shoot my dogs but I also wouldn't let my dogs run free on other peoples hunting property.
What do you guys do when this sort of thing happens to you? I plan on keeping a pellet gun handy for now but as the season approaches it will bother me more and more. Any good advice is appreciated.

The first rule of taking care of dog problems is you don’t talk about taking care of dog problems.

Seeing how its a felony to shoot someone's dog without permission I would make that my last choice. Talk to a local Sheriff or game warden would be my first step if I didn't know my neighbors.

LEO's and GW'S have both told me if I see a dog on my property SSS. They don't need the extra work.

The only time I cam close to "handling the problem" was at my neighbor's place, Oldrancher's (on here) father called and said two dogs were chasing his sheep, they'd been seen doing it for days, but a lot of the grandkids were around and his wife did not want them to see a dog shot. I drove over and he came out of the house, holding a rifle for me to take...grandkids chattering, and "Oma" yelling at her husband in German. That was a real slice of the Hill Country I love right there in just a couple of minutes. rofl

I go across the road, into his pasture, as instructed, walk a little ways and here come two dogs loping up to me. I raise rifle, put the scope on the lead dog and it's a clone of my childhood, mostly border collie, Rocket (who only responded to Spanish, but that's another story. grin ). Now I had to go back with MY tail between my legs and tell this pillar of the community sheep rancher that I couldn't do it. He didn't hold a grudge. He was awesome that way. 'Never found out what happened to those canines. confused2

Shoulda never said anything about it...just take care of it. Many things are often best left unsaid.

You gotta sick sense of humor. But there's something about it I like. 'Not sure it's healthy.

Thanks for the advice. We will have the TPWD out to advise us on a wildlife management plan soon so I will just ask him what local etiquette on the matter is. Owning dogs myself and knowing how much the kids love em' I really hate to dispatch someones pet that may be a "member of the family"
We are new to the area and I would rather make friends than enemies if you know what I mean.

You'll be hard pressed to find a bigger dog lover than me but the honest truth is that if this is happening over and over then...….

I'd put an end to it

It's not the animals fault in any way and a dog owner that doesn't do better than that by him needs his azz kicked!

High fence, low fence, no fence, it really doesn't matter as long as you're hunting!

That's keeping your head on your shoulders. I look at dogs on my hunting lease the same way I would if I were staying with out-of-town relatives. No way I'm going to become the start of a fuss between the landowner and his neighbors and be forced to lie once the situation boils into something. Deer live in world with many predators and dogs may actually provide benefits against critters that have to find their own food every day. I'll always inform the landowner of anything that seems out of place but it's up to him/her to take the lead with issues with neighbors. I always assume the role of being a guest to the area and dictate my behavior as such. Also, it may not bother some folks to lease from a landowner who always seems to have issues with his neighbors but I do my best to avoid them. A hunting lease is supposed to be a place with little or no drama.

Some counties have an animal control person. If you can catch the dogs and take them to them or have them come get them it will help.

A tall rancher and his able bodied sidekick were travelling near a bordering fence on a county road on his very large hill country ranch. Saw a dog up under a tree on a tank dam. Being this was primarily a sheep & goat operation, invasive doggies were shot on sight. The tall rancher grabbed his trusty, rusty 243 and took aim. The sidekick piped in that something was strange, that there was a siberian husky. Tall rancher piped back, well it's gonna be a dead husky.

The short rang true and the dog fell awkwardly. The next thing you know, a family came running over the tank dam. They had parked their car on the county road, crossed the fence, tied their doggie to that tree and were enjoying a picnic lunch on the bank near the tank. It wasn't the tall rancher who killed their family pet. It was the idjit trespassers.
