I have a compound bow (Browning) that I haven't shot in years due to being too busy to practice. I recently retired and was thinking about using it again vs. my crossbow. It looks fine in the case - do you think I should take it to an archery shop before using it? or just wax the strings and oil it?

It might be ok but I would get it checked out. Browning Archer was bought by PSE in the late 90s and pre 2000 Browning bows they do not support with parts if needed.

I have a BSE from 1983 that still shoots good but had a 1997 Browning I had to retire in 2012 due to an issue and no parts available.

Yes defintiely take to an archery shop. Get a tune up and replace the strings.

Don't know how long is sat but I asked a friend yesterday if he was still shooting his old bow. Nope he said, it blew up sitting in the case, I don' t know how many years it'd been put up and I'm sure in the garage.

Any bow that has not been shot in a while should be looked after by a good tech before shooting. Blowing up in your face is not fun and might get a fat lip.
