Say your driving cross country . Name one state you would drive an extra 100 miles or more to avoid driving thru. Illinois tops my list. Not just Chicago. The whole state

Illinois, I actually did detour around it in February going to Wisconsin. Iowa to Michigan to Wisconsin.

California for me...land of the fruits & nuts. Plus their CHiP’s are total douches.

I drive through southern Illinois all the time and it ain't bad at all. Good roads. The only thing wrong with Illinois is Chicago. And recent SCOTUS/court decisions have forced the state to enact a peaceable journey law of sorts, so now I keep packing all the way through.

Don't get me wrong. I don't "hang out" in Illinois, and I only travel I-64 and only for about 100 miles at that. I don't try to push my luck and I'm not going to travel through less-friendly parts in the north, but I don't avoid Illinois either.

Any major metro area for any blue state or blue city if at all possible. As for the entire state, New Jersey, Connecticut, Massachusetts, and Oregon....I'll pump my own damn gas thank you very much...

This, when I went home to the UP a couple years ago I went through TN up into Indiana to avoid Illinois.

Mississippi. Spent much of my youth there and it's the only place I was last stopped twice while driving along I-20 for chicken-chit reasons.

In the last incident, I was returning to Houston after visiting my parents who were still living in Meridian. I was near Jackson heading West and noticed a Pearl City LEO about five feet from my rear bumper as I was passing a car while in the left lane. After seeing it was an LEO, I slowed down and pulled back into the right lane to allow him to pass. He followed my move and then turned on his lights. When I asked him why he had stopped me his response was that I was following the car in front of me too close.

Next to last incident occurred just East of Newton, MS. around 11pm. I noticed a Newton City LEO parked on the shoulder as I was heading EAST. I had already pulled over to the left lane even though he was parked half-way off the shoulder at a 45 degree angle. The interstate is a straight stretch for about 3/4 of a mile and I waited until I had reached most of it before returning to the right lane. With not another moving car on the highway in sight, I didn't see the need to use my turn signal. Just then the LEO turned his lights on and pursed me. When I pulled over he said he stopped me because I failed to use my turn signal.

I wasn't cited in either case but feel it was only because I had my kids in my car with me. My dad was battling cancer at the time and we were making trips to visit him before he passed. There's no question in my mind the reason why I was stopped was because I had Texas plates and they thought I might be running drugs or drug money or both.

After graduating from college my wife and I couldn't get out of that damn state fast enough.

I’ll drive through West Virginia, but I won’t stop. You know what they say about stereotypes.

There are a few states that I just don't care to see but I go where I please. IMO you're missing out on some beautiful country if you let stereotypes and reputations stop you from visiting.
