I was watching Lone Star Law the other night and learned something I did not know. The GW drove into a hunting camp and walked over and picked up a
rifle. It was loaded, so he wrote the man who owned it a ticket. Now, all of the hunting leases that I have been on, we
had a rule, no loaded guns in camp. I'm just asking when did it become a law? And I hunt alone many times, so if I bring
my gun back into camp loaded, I'm breaking the law?

Wasn't that the one that was on public land?

No, they did not. Just got out of the truck and walked over to where the rifle was and picked it up and pulled back the bolt.
Then he pulled it back several more times until the gun was unloaded. Then man did say, "you can just take the clip out it
you want to unload the gun. The GW Did not ask anyone for permission to handle it.

It's definitely NOT against the law on private property, it may be on different public lands I have no idea on that.

I perked up on that same episode when I watched it and they stated it was against the law in a public land camping area. I listened to and read the captioning as it came across the screen. I just spoke with our county warden who is from that area originally and he said what I understood. On public land camping areas, no loaded fire arms in camp. On private lands, it is legal to have a loaded firearm but for safety reason not advisable.

Of course, an unloaded firearm isn't much good for anything. Game warden rolls into camp, you can bet he doesn't unload "for safety reasons."

This is your answer, OP. Still legal on private land.

I concur completely..........these days if I'm exposed to the public I am gonna be armed.........I would have to camp elsewhere......

I doubt they’d want to come back, or that you’d still be standing.

I had a good friend just last year kind of hunt his way back to the truck after a morning hunt with gun loaded. He set the rifle down across the seat and was going to take off his backpack before unloading and the gun went off as he sat it down and shot through the passenger door. It was some type of faulty trigger/safety issue he had to fix. Sure glad it didnt happen in camp.

Loaded mags are fine at our camp (chambers empty of course, that's a no no), but all of us keep loaded sidearms. Unloaded sidearms don't do you much good when you need them quick, like when a group of illegals walks into camp unannounced and you don't know their intentions (yes, has happened several times).

It was a public hunting area campground. And, the dang gun didn't have the safety engaged!

The majority of hunting-related accidental shootings don't happen in the woods but around vehicles and other places. People tend to be more careful in the woods. It's complacency that doesn't mix well with loaded firearms in other settings.

That’s what I was thinking. Sounds tough though.

My next door neighbor's cousin shot his cousin in the rear end while putting a rifle in a truck 3 years ago.

Two incidents that happened in the Houston area come to mind, both involving adults and unfortunately resulting in death. In the first, a guy was removing his shotgun from his vehicle at a local shooting range and forgot that he had left if loaded since the previous hunting season. In the second incident, a local high school coach had been duck hunting and left his shotgun loaded before laying it in the bed of his truck. His dog jumped into the bed and the gun went off when the dog stepped on the trigger.

I saw that episode, pretty careless (or plain stupid) to lay a loaded a rifle on a camp chair a small gust of wind could blow over.
