This week on CARNIVORE we will be back in the Rez with Calvin Redhouse chasing the big predators with hounds. I hope that you will tune in if you get the chance.
Thanks and Adios,
Gary

They call it "the big rez". The Navajo Reservation. Fascinating area.

I grew up on a reservation, saying Rez is a low class way of descriping it and the people who live there. Some folks know and some folks don't know.

You coulda led with that. 'Don't think Gary means to disparage the people who live there. Pretty sure he means quite the opposite.

Not arguing but my grandfather was 1/2 Cherokee ( his mom grew up on the reservation in Oklahoma ) and his daughter, my aunt married a full blood Mescalero Apache and they all used the term “Rez”

For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.

I'm pretty sure he didn't. Locals have always called the reservation the "Rez" but it raises eyebrows when folks who don't live around them say it. Kinda like "I can say anything about my family I want" but the second someone else does, the fights on.

There are actually some members of my family that I find it reassuring when someone outside the family even politely hints that they might have a problem. It could just be a look. 'Means I wasn't crazy and imagining those things - most of my adult life. bang

Arizona has a lot of tribal lands, those who live there refer to it as "The Rez". Those saying reservation are viewed as being outsiders and wanting something, Salesman and Politicians.
They call themselves by tribal name, Navajo, Apache, etc, and not as Indians or native Americans.

I have two Navaho friends, brothers, that live near Farmington NM .And they've invited me and the wife out to the REZ several times and their family is great none were sensitive to some of my dumb remarks and they all have a great sense of humor.Their dad who is one of the tribal chiefs told I don't have to worry because I'm bald so I didn't have nothing to scalp. At least I hope it was humor 😳

Don't know where I'm goin but I'm makin good time

I am very close to many of the Navajo hunters and they are great folks. We all refer to it as the Rez when we are visiting, Calvin Redhouse even refers to his guide service as "Rez Hounds". You can see that on his facebook page or the cap that he wears. I would never say anything that I thought would hurt the feelings of the ones I love.
Adios,
Gary

I used to spend a lot of time there too and still know people from there and all use/used the term “Rez” too. Never in/as disrespectful.

I always used the term reservation but that’s just me... I can’t stand people calling coyotes “dogs” either but I just give them the look and move on.

Never thought much about it, but I once looked up coyote info and found that the Latin name translated to Barking Dog. Maybe I read to much as a kid, but seem ok to call it a dog.
Manny of the folks I have worked with from the BIA such as the , Apache, Sioux, Seminole, or Miccosukee called the reservation " The REZ" a lot the locals done the same, never seen the kid care, the banners in High school sports even referred to The REZ on both sides.

The coyote's scientific name, Canis latrans actually means barking dog

The earliest written reference to the species comes from the naturalist Francisco Hernández's Plantas y Animales de la Nueva España (1651), where it is described as a "Spanish fox" or "jackal". The first published usage of the word "coyote" (which is a Spanish borrowing of its Nahuatl name coyōtl About this soundpronunciation (help·info)) comes from the historian Francisco Javier Clavijero's Historia de México in 1780.[19] The first time it was used in English occurred in William Bullock's Six months' residence and travels in Mexico (1824), where it is variously transcribed as cayjotte and cocyotie. The word's spelling was standardized as "coyote" by the 1880s.[17][20] Alternative English names for the coyote include "prairie wolf", "brush wolf", "cased wolf",[21][a] "little wolf"[22] and "American jackal".[23] Its binomial name Canis latrans translates to "barking dog", a reference to the many vocalizations they produce.[24]

Some folks are looking for a reason to be offended. It seems to be the thing these days, kinda like being a victim.
