I really like my 6.8 but I could see moving on from it, particularly if the 6mm ARC does what they say it will. We don't have enough hogs to justify needing a few more rounds in the mag versus the extra ft-lbs the ARC may carry and the downrange ballistic capability.

The new Kevlar armored deer and hogs justify owning the latest and greatest modern rifle, the ancient 243 is barely minimal and a 30-30 will bounce right off.

it needs only to be better for the users intended purpose. True statement. A 3030 might be better because it can be had used for dirt cheap to the kid with only $200 in his pocket. Which makes it not really better, just different. I'll bet the guy you originally quoted would say that basically everything is better than a 30-30. I disagree I think a 30-30 is a fine round there are other cartridges that are different but I don't think they're better. Which was my point all along. "Is a fine round" is a REALLY low bar. That like saying its "good enough." Lots of things are "good enough." Lots of things are better than those things. Remington 783 is a "good enough" rifle for shooting deer at 100yds. There are also BETTER options for most people. If 30-30 works for you, fine. There are other options that are inarguably BETTER in any given performance metric you pick. That is the objective definition of "better." again, doesnt mean you NEED it, but something being better isn't based on your subjective desire to own it

.243 heads my list and I have no problem with those that love it. Too much punch for preserving fur on varmints. Works for deer but is on the light side of my preference. Great deer rifle for women and kids that can’t handle more recoil. I’m not a woman or a kid and struggle to put it in a category that It would be among my preferred choices to shoot.

But that is still a VERY subjective metric and really outside the scope of this thread, so i am done messing with it here. Have a good one

I used to get excited about exotic calibers, particularly if they were Euro. As time goes by, I'm more interested in actual hunting and shooting than messing with gear, and I've come to the conclusion that actual performance is virtually identical between cartridges within a given category. I've sold a number of the odd ball chamberings, and I'm sure most of the others will follow over the next few years.

Bought my wife a "better" gun ,a beautiful old model Remington 700 with a compact stock and 26 in barrel, first one I ever seen,in the 25-06. Thought I was doing good.so when deer season rolled around last year she cased her tried and true Ruger 22-250 which she is I think 13 out of 14 with.the one doe that got away was my fault .i meant she put it in the case loaded it in the truck and took it hunting

All calibers still do it, even 6.5 creedless.

243 Winchester every time I shoot a deer I regret it. They always run (shoulder shot) and leave very little trail. There are better choices for light recoil rifles.
