I know I am

Can’t wait to be up in a tree bow in hand

Hell yeah. Was shooting some broadheads yesterday. Bow is ready, I am ready, just waiting for a little cooler weather and season to open. Hopefully going to shoot a cow elk this year with a bow.

Dropped the bow off at the shop to get a new string. Been working on feeders and stands.

I can't wait. Its been so dry in June and July. The deer are really coming to the feeders right now. Hopefully, there won't be a "BIG" green up in September. Heck, I've noticed the live oak trees at my home are starting to drop leaves (too hot) so maybe there will be a limited acorn supply this fall.

I stay ready for deer season. Persimmon crop is about done and have seen a few green mesquite beans as of the last week. Not seen an acorn yet but just checked a few trees last week. Recent rains have greened things up a lot but it will have to keep raining to stay green in mid summer here. Lot of deer at one of my bowblinds and quite a few bucks in the am. at another one. One other bowblind is not active right now but it will pick up late summer. Hogs are moving in and I am working on them with a rifle every morning I can. Got my food plots plowed 2 weeks ago. Now with recent rains I will run over them again to break up the clods and get the new growth disc under next week.

I am but....I don't have a place to hunt this yr yet.
Looked at a potential lease yesterday and it was wide open for the most part. Couldn't make it work if I wanted to.
Any leads is appreciated.

dont discount wide open places with the cover in the right spot. I sold a small 50 acre tract of land that was pretty much wide open prarie. all the cedar had been cleared on all the neighboring ranches including this one. There was a small wet weather drainage and 4 little oak motts on the place with maybe 4-5 trees each in it. Looked like a picture perfect horse place ( what it was actually ) but not much for hunting.

Boy you should have seen the deer that i ran out of there in November.....Guy i sold it to put up a feeder and had the same type of success. He bowhunts and had no issue taking a nice buck.

Have you seen the deer in the panhandle and Kansas?

Whitetails live every where, I’d take lower density over high, But I grew up in high plains so I’m a little biased

We worked on a ranch one time that was a really neat experience. 5 k acres high fenced. Owner died and it sat for about 5 years with no one hardly stepping foot on the place. There were plenty of deer ( probably the majority of them ) in there that had never seen a person.

Place was a mix of river bottom habitat and typical post oak belt type country, sandy soil and lots of hardwoods along with some mesquite. Right in the middle of the ranch was about 700 acres of open country that had once been a coastal pasture but had since been reclaimed by nature and had a lot of native grass in it. Aside from the odd live oak or mesquite it was wide open.

I would have ventured a guess that 700 acres had more deer per acre living in it than the rest of the ranch did. You drove a truck thru it all you saw were tails bouncing over the head high grass.

And keep it attached to your bow.

I forgot my release one time ( also in the backpack I left at camp )

Now I keep it strapped to my bow

ChrisB, txtrophy8 - I feel your pain

I heard the impala rams "growling" (they make this sort of growling noise during the rut) and I headed in that direction. The wind was right and I when I was about 300m from where I thought the impala might be I slowed right down to snails pace. 45 minutes later I spotted 2 big rams in the thick bush. My plan was to see which way they were moving and try to position myself in front of them and let them come to me. Impala are very wary and these sorts of plans don't come off very often. However, for once I managed to execute my plan to perfection and the imapala were now only 60m or so from me and moving slowly in my direction. I nocked an arrow and was about to clip on my release when I realised, with substantial shock and disappointment, that I had left my release safely in camp ...

I hunt in KS so yes...…There are more trees in KS than one would think.
this place was 600 acres and had approx. 10acres of woods. That's it. I could hunt it but I cant afford the place by myself.
Also, mid Nov, stocker calves are placed on it. There is no way to convince me that this place will be good. It was close to home so I know the area pretty well and there aren't a lot of deer there.

Got my spots all cleaned up last weekend so I am ready
to go. Of course, I just need to get a couple of dove hunts in before the opener. Other than that, we are looking forward to opening weekend.

Getting the setups ready. Eye surgery got postponed last week, now scheduled until 9/17 so that may delay my starting hunting for later than opening day but will be ready for when I can. Been shooting the recurve some daily and the crossbow is checked and ready to rock.

Have a 12 yard setup already in place for the recurve when the wind is right.

I was specifically speaking panhandle and western KS. You don’t need much, make some lemonade don’t forget about texas draw hunts.

Raring to go! Wish I had a closer pic of this buck. Even with the photo not being that great and it being from behind I think he might qualify as a mature shooter. [Linked Image]
