im a knife dummy. does this mean you buy blades already made and just fit them to bolster and grips then finish. I know it sounds way more simple as it sounds.

Grinding metal away from a cut blank as opposed to forging into shape....

Stock removal is just grinding a blade to shape. You remove all the "stock" that isn't a knife. Usually this is in contrast to forging, where you hammer a piece of steel into a knife shape.

Buying a finished blank and installing handles or bolsters can be honest work, if you say that's what you're doing, but it's neither forging nor stock removal. It can also be dishonest work, if you claim you "made" the knife but you only installed parts.

A forged knife and a stock removal knife of identical geometry and identical heat treat would have identical performance.

I’ve done it just about every way. First knife was hammered out of some kind of a plow Part at a blacksmith shop in Lariat Texas. The town no longer exists but that was about 1956.

About 10 years ago I found that I could buy good high carbon steel blades from Jantz Supply. They were as good as anything I could make and today I consider myself a “handle putter owner”.

BTW, never could work up much enthusiasm for stainless steel.

Interesting. I'm no metallurgist, but I would have thought that forging would produce a more dense and tougher steel.

I would say the two go hand in hand.. all the forged blades I have held had some form of grinding/stock removal. I would also say metal blanks that are for cut with water jet were forged at one point or another by hand or machine. This may not be speaking to the purist form of either.
