Do y’all have any superstitions that feel bring you good luck when hunting? Something y’all do once in the field or carry with you?


I use bullet sleeves on whatever rifle(s) I’m hunting with during the season and I always keep the spent brass of the first animal (whatever it species it is) I shoot with any given rifle on the gun’s bullet sleeve and won’t go hunt without the bullet sleeve with the spent casing on it. The spent brass always goes and stays in the first slot of the sleeve. As a result of this every rifle I own has its own bullet sleeve stored in the ammo cabinet.

I have a case knife that my Uncle ( who was more like a grandpa to me) gave me and I always carry it, my uncle and grandpa both carried the same model of knife and I continue to do it. One of the guys at camp bought me a knife and told me not to bring the case knife next time since it doesn’t lock the blade but I still carry it lol.

Did you give him a nickel when he gave you the new knife? If not, that's supposedly super bad mojo!

I've seen Professional Hunters in Zimbabwe pick up Mahogany beans while hunting 'cause they're supposed to bring good luck. Tons of strange superstitions/traditions in southern Africa.

I have a similar superstition or practice in regards to the spent brass. I always leave it in the blind the shot was made be it my blind or someone else's. It tells the story. I have 15 years worth in one particular Mills County blind that I hunt from. I remember each one and kinda can tell their age by the patina. To me it is not littering or leaving trash it is a token or tribute. Silly but I have done it since my first deer at age 12. I am 53 now and haven't missed too many seasons so have left a few.

The Superstitions are a Mountain Range in Arizona that have a lot of superstitions about them.

My grandson who is now 13 has a cap that I gave him when he first started hunting with me at 7 years old,and he will NOT go hunting without it.Last year when we were getting ready for the annual Orrin and PawPaw trip to Swinny Switch near Mathis,he couldn't find it and panic set in,finally my daughter remembered she put it in the top of his closet.so when we got back home it went in my gun safe,the cap is filthy and kind of stinks but at least he knows where it's at 😂

I've found that when I spot a great buck It will come towards me if I begin to shake. The more I shake the closer it gets. So, for years I've made it a practice of getting the shakes when a nice buck shows up.

I'll sometimes take a different rifle just to see if it might change things up a bit. And yes, there have been seasons when I would see more game when using a certain rifle.

It's my Winchester Model 70 Featherweight 25-06 that seems to have become my "lucky" gun. As hunters once did many generations ago, I've yet to give it a name but "Lucky Gun" does come to mind.

Not really superstition I guess but more of a ritual, but the day before every opening morning I have taken off work and spend the day in camp. I'll bring way too much gear and too many rifles, but will spend time in the camper going through everything and sharpening all the knives I have. Then lay out what I need based on weather and blind and get my pack ready. My hunting buds of many years usually show up later in the afternoon. I take camp chef role that night, while they do the same prepping I did earlier in the day. Like to the OP about spent brass on a harvested animal, we also keep those in the blind on a shelf. Only exception is the first deer one of our kids took, which is given to them on a plaque with a hand written note from Dad about the hunt.

I used to stop and get a bottle of Wild Turkey on the way before opening. Now that I'm more mature (theoretical), better funded, and don't drink like that anymore, there's always a bottle down there.

Got a few hats that I try to wear hunting and try to hunt on my birthday in October killed several nice pigs on that day

I have one superstition and that is that I always archery hunt on October 31st. I have killed 4 deer on that day in the last 19 yrs and all 4 were in the morning.

Shotguns with bird shot are unlucky for me. I can't shoot birds worth a dang with them. But with buckshot, a hog on the run, bouncing across a field at 30 MPH in the Gator, is dead meat.

You taught your hogs to drive a Gator?

Probably more tradition than superstition, but on opening day I always hunt with one of the rifles I inherited from my dad, a Remington 760 in 30-06 or 35 Whelen.

Seeing dead hogs on the road before I get to my hunting areas is something that I consider to be a good sign.

Seeing live hogs out and about before I get to my hunting areas is something that I consider to be a very good sign.

Both seem to go hand-in-hand with me getting one or more hogs that night.

I always have a Texas Buckeye in my bag. Old man that taught me to hunt, said the Indians called them Eagle eyes.

...lol....I have almost the same routine and my son joins me. We'll get there around 11 am and go pull the camera cards then head back to camp to get everything set up....steak is usually on the grill for dinner along with a nice old fashioned or some other smooth beverage while we browse the pics. And yes, all spent brass stays on a shelf in the blind during the season.
