This week on Carnivore, we will check in with Calvin Redhouse in the Navajo Nation. Footage of the great predators hunted the way they have been hunted for thousands of years where few hunters dare to travel. If you are thinking about a bear or lion hunt, I cannot recommend Calvin enough.
Adios,
Gary

Does he offer spot and stalk or calling for lions? I have no interest in running one up a tree with dogs.

There's that "I have no interest" phrase again. Hunting with dogs has only been around since man first created an alliance with them. To each his own.

I had no idea the term "I have no interest" would trigger someone. I was just letting Gary know I don't want to hunt lions with dogs, so he could give me the correct information about, if the guide offers spot and stalk and calling. confused2

Humm, dogs don't just run them up a tree usually. Try keeping up with a pack of hounds in the mountains, no easy task. Spouse had to climb the tree to get his shot at a nice mt lion years back, it came down right beside him in the tree after the recurve bow shot.
You don't get that on a spot and stalk.
However to each his own as they say and no judgement here ntxtrapper. Spot and stalk and calling might work after striking tracks. Our last cat was taken via happenstance when we jumped it from the hay meadows.

Looking forward to the show Mr Roberson.

If I tried to do a hunt like that they'd find me laying at the bottom of a mountain gasping for air, I had enough trouble just keeping up with Coon Dogs in the flat lands. No way I could hump the mountains them boy's do, they'd need a defibrillator if I went!

Yes! A Weatherby does kill them deader.

I would rather kill a big lion than a 200" LF, legit WT!
But, after making some enquiries while in NM last month, it seems the cost of that hunt is about the same as that 200" WT hunt. lol

As far as how you hunt these predators, calling, stalking, dogs...….I have no problem with any of them whatsoever and actually love hunting over dogs whether it be upland game birds, waterfowl, or predators!!!

Nothing better than watching good dogs do what they love.

High fence, low fence, no fence, it really doesn't matter as long as you're hunting!

Calvin only hunts with dogs. I have called a couple of lions up over many years and it was an accident every time. A lion tag will cost you $250 and then you will have to pay Calvin to take you. Most likely will end up costing $2,500-$3,5000 which is pretty cheap for this day and time.
Yes, they did shut down the Rez and that is why I was reviewing video on the old laptop...
Oxygen is a precious commodity up there.
Adios,
Gary

Thank you. I'm just too old with too many work injuries to chase dogs anymore is why I'm looking for a spot and stalk or call hunt.

I’ve heard of some horseback lion hunts in New Mexico. Easier than walking, but 3 days in the saddle would be rough.

If you are in riding shape, mules are the way to go, however, riding in the mountains is much more physically demanding than riding on flat ground. Your going to be hurting in places that you didn't know you had...

hahaha lmao

Hell Gary, the last time I climbed up on my old paint pony a couple years back I was sore for 2 weeks just from giving him a little workout. Now he is just a big pasture ornament!
I'd likely be a cripple for life riding a mule over that rough country!
