I've always used Aimpoints for the most part and the smaller MOA dot isn't that bad, but it looks like a star burst. Always just thought that was the way it was until I was doing some research on red dots for my new 300BLK micro build. I did the trick where you look through your phone at the dot instead of looking directly at the dot. Wow have I been missing out. Guess I have a pretty bad Astigmatism. I had a delta point pro before with the triangle dot and it just looked like a blob.

I know i can get an 1x etched glass reticle with illumination to act as a red dot, but I've read the illumination isn't really "day light bright" like a red dot. I've also been reading that EoTech's holographic sights are better for Astigmatisms since they bounce lasers off mirrors before it gets to your eye. Can anyone confirm this?

Need to look through a EoTech and see.

I had an EOTech and thought it was a lot worse than my MRO. My MRO looks to me like the top right picture as well, but that's good enough for my purposes.

I have mild astigmatism in my right eye, and a bad one in my left.

That’s what I was afraid of, I like the looks of EOTech sans the reticles but I’m afraid it’ll be worse.

Have the same problem, am looking for a prism scope, I've settled on the Sig Bravo 5 just need to find one at a decent price and in stock.

What I've researched and read is either the holographic sights or prism scopes are good for people with astigmatism.

Holographic sights are more of a heads-up sight, prism scope you can get mounted lower, tend to be heavier than a holographic sight.

Yep, mine is bad. You can also punch a little hole in a piece of paper between you and the red dot and peep through the hole to see what you are missing,

That’s what I’ve heard or read as well. Think I’m going to run by gun store this weekend and look through a EO and if it’s still the same I’ll be getting a etched/prism. I was looking at the primary arms 1x Cyclopes. Which I think is the same as the Romeo and Holosun think all three of them are made in same factory in China. Might look for a trijicon type that is etched that is lit by tritium but don’t know if they have a 1x version.

With my eye issues I have given up on red dots, they look more like a comet and with the Astigmatism and fuchs that dot is often not where it should be. Good luck finding what works well for you,

A good friend had eye surgery and all red dots look like a blob but green dots are clear to him. You might try different colors

My eyes are a mess I just today picked up a Sig Bravo 3, and the preliminary report is that it’s a better mousetrap. We’ll see how I feel in a week or two.

There is something called chromatic aberration that can make green look more clear than red due to the colors being away from each other on the color spectrum and having slight near sightedness or far sightedness can accentuate that difference.

For someone that sees green more clearly than red my guess is they are a little near sighted, not enough to make a real difference to vision, but for someone a little near sighted the red will appear blurred compared to green.

I may have that backwards, but the point is still the same.

Astigmatism doesn’t cause as much chromatic aberration, it mainly causes other types of aberration like coma and trefoil. Those can lead to the streaking/comet appearance.

To correct astigmatism, glasses, contacts, or surgery can fix it. For people old enough, cataract surgery can fix it with an upgraded lens, and lasik can fix astigmatism quite well. If you had cataract surgery already, if you have residual astigmatism then lasik can fix it too. Lots of surgical options these days

When I put my dots on the 2 guns I have, they were fine. A few years go by and I start going to the range a lot. All of a sudden my dots are starburst in one (bad starburst too) and the other looks like a backslash. Looking thru my 18 power scope I notice the the crosshairs where they intersect are becoming double and then the centers start disappearing. Time for me to go to an optometrist. Never been to one before and from what I had googled, I was afraid it was astigmatism or something much worse. I had always had excellent vision and didn't realize how much my eyes had deteriorated. Got em checked out and my best eye wasn't even close to being good enough to get my DL renewed! Everything checked out fine to rule out anything bad. It was plain old cataracts in my case. Got both eyes fixed and my vision now is 20/15. Red dots look the way they are supposed to, and colors, especially the blues and greens, really pop now.
In other words, astigmatism aint the only thing that makes red dots look all starburst.
If you haven't been checked, get those peepers checked.

some of us oldies are used to this problem. It was the worst with my bow sight

I had a special lense made for my shooting glasses to make the front sight sharp for range shooting. Another set for clay shooting.

On the reflex sights, I just deal with it as these are not for precision shooting (mostly)

I've gone green laser on all semi-auto handguns. These worry REALLY good.

Bad things about custom glasses: Can get expensive and RX changes every couple years

noticed it was worse on the lower end sights. started using the true 1x scopes on my sub-guns and the have enough adjustment to fix any problem ie Steiner etc etc

Kyle, I run the Vortex Spitfire 1x on both my AR pistols. It’s an etched circle dot reticle and will illuminate at the touch of a button. It’s the best 1x I have found that’s not a red dot.

I was looking at that one too Chad. Wish you were closer so I could look through it. Gun stores around here don’t have much to choose from.

I went with the Bushnell LIL P on my AR pistol because of my astigmatism.

Like alot of asians, I too have poor vision, worn glasses since an early age and astigmatism with the same issues.

1. My wife has had non-surgical corrective lasik surgery. She used to have this issue but no more. Side note, she's now extra sensitive to bright so she almost always wears sunglasses in full sunshine.

2. Looking through the rear sight will make the starburst go away. I'm too ignorant to know the mechanics of how but I do this when I wanna make a precision shot with a red dot. Not the best solution but I can sit on my rear and band a man sized silhouette at 400 yards, like 3-4 out of 5 shots.

Just went to two different gun shops. First one had no Eotech, green dots, or prisms. Academy had only the Vortex AMG which is holo sight like the EoTech and it looked worse than my red dot. I’ve been using the Aimpoints for forever and they’ve worked fine for me so I’ll be grabbing a micro reflex for my new lil stubby build.

I bought the first gen at the NRA show in Dallas for a discount. Works fine for me.

For anyone curious, astigmatism is caused by your cornea not being perfectly round which will create more than one focal point for everything at all distances on your retina. You are basically getting 2 images slightly offset from each other. That’s why the pinhole trick works. You are essentially blocking off one of the images by covering it while the other focal point image gets through. I have had a Toric lens implant in one eye which corrects astigmatism.

Back to the prism RDO. Because the reticle is etched, it is still visible in daytime even if your battery craps out on you. Downside is they cost more.
