Something I've noticed as I've gotten older is that I can't take the heat like I did years ago. Not sure if it's a matter of poor conditioning or if the old body just can't keep up like it once did. While it's been on TV where I've seen the most cases where someone needed medical attention from heat stroke, I've seen or learned of more cases where dogs were lost when they got too hot before their owner knew it and could turn the situation around. With a good sporting or working dog always wanting to do its best to work hard, it's up to us to watch them closely or not even put them out there when the heat is too dangerous. Damn shame to lose a dog just because its never had a problem with the heat before.

Good point. We're extra careful with all of our animals.

For me I think it is more of spending way to much time indoors this time of the year and not outside working all day like I used to. I know now if I start at daylight working into the day I can take the heat a bit better than if I try to start late morning. Back 15 yrs ago when I lived and worked in La Salle county I could tell the difference on a 105 degree day if I started at daylight vs. running 34 miles to town early, then try to start my work day during the heat of the day. Most pets are more indoor pets than outdoors today also. They are used to the cooler temps.

My neighbor I think is related to the predator alien in Schwarzenegger's Predator, he only starts working in his yard if it's 100 or higher. Tough little sucker and he properly covers up and I'm pretty sure hydrates plenty, but dam.

My dogs are super spoiled and definitely spend a lot of time indoors now. The blue lacy is now terrified of the "demon doe" that is about to drop fawns and won't leave our back yard. The lab will charge her, but she ain't that quick and has been warned with a hoof a couple of days ago. I can barely get the lacy to pee, she wants back in so bad if that evil deer is out there. Some ranch dog. roflmao Of course, I'm sure they'll be "fearless" with brand-new fawns, which is why I try to drive her to the front yard at least. Dang stubborn whitetail.

For people it's the Rule of Three:

You can live three weeks without food.
You can live three days without water (in normal conditions).
Extreme heat or cold will kill you in three hours.

107 when I drove into the ranch. Only 70 sacks. I thought I would wait until three consecutive days 105 or over to come down.
