I am not from Texas, joined this forum seeking info for future Texas hunts. I have gotten very helpful info, thanks.

Have been reading a lot about High fence ranches and have a general question about what the cost to high fence a ranch?
What is the general opinion of high fence whitetail hunting, here in Alabama there are more being added each year, although they are looked upon as “Elitist” by the “average hunter”

Just looking for general discussion, not bashing anybody or their opinion?

Thanks

High fences have been around here for a long time.

In a lot of areas here high fences are more common than low fences.

Where my families place is it’s high fenced in both sides of the highway for 14 miles straight

On highway 41 between Mountain home and rocksprings it’s 10:1 high fence places and that stretch is 40 miles plus

On cost It varies by area. In south Texas I can get a fence built turn key for around $3.50/ft. In hill country it can run $6.50-$12.00/foot depending on terrain and material

For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.

That’s interesting- never thought about the cost comparison but ~$4 a foot for flat and non-rocky dirt is the same price as barbed wire

I don’t know about cost but I’m just guessing it would be more expensive than a standard five strand barb wire fence or net fence but I honestly don’t know that for sure.

As for hunting high fence, I personally believe that on a large enough place there is no issues with it, I wouldn’t want to hunt on less than 500 acres personally though, and the more acres the better. But I don’t knock people for hunting how they want to as long as it’s legal and they enjoy themselves.

South Texas pricing not North or Hill country as you indicated. Think North Texas runs $30K+ per mile

$4/foot for even a really good, all steel post, 6-strand high tensiled 12.5 gauge barbed wire sounds kind of high. Material wise you will have about $1.20-$1.30/ft in a good 6-strand fence.

High fence, low fence, no fence, it really doesn't matter as long as you're hunting!
