The seedless watermelons at Walmart are really good right now. So I wanted watermelon for lunch. Not just plain old watermelon, a watermelon salad. I’ve never had one before but that didn’t stop me. I envisioned small chunks of seeded watermelon, diced English cuke, diced avocado, slivered red onion, cored and chopped jalapeños, cilantro and feta cheese. I didn’t have the cuke or the avocado but that didn’t stop me.

It turned out great! Tomorrow I’ll get the missing pieces with my grocery delivery and make another one. I’ll post a pic of that one.

I love a good watermelon. I really like the new seedless ones but I'd sure like to find one of those old "black diamonds" I use to get when I was a kid!

My neighbor grows watermelons commercially and they're outstanding. His yellow melons are the best I've ever had but he brings us so many that we're just about tired of them by this time of year

Some country stores cooled them in their ice house if they didn't have too much ice in them.

Marshall ice house had big black diamond watermelons. Dad loved them, so we loaded them in the station wagon regularly in the summertime. It took me and my brother to lift them in. Don’t know what they cost but knowing my dad, they were cheap. They always cracked when you started cutting them. They are the only watermelon that you can thump to determine if they are ripe. Why? The heart splits open when they’re ripe. If they sound hollow when thumped, the heart is split and they’re ripe. I’ve never had a black diamond that wasn’t good.

I use the wobble test to determine how ripe all the other types of watermelons.

Cast, could you be confusing Black Diamond with Tom Watson?
The size is why I ask.

I like them already sliced into chunks in a plastic container. Yes , they taste great and aren't as messy, I know.... that's half the fun.

Cold, no salt.

Damm, now I want some realmad

We go through 2-3 watermelons a week at my house....wife cuts one up and the kids have it about half-eaten within an hour or two it seems.

I grew up on a cotton farm in Arkansas. I copped cotton in the spring. I planted seeds in skips and near turn rows. Picked cotton on beautiful cool fall all days. Nothing ever taste better than eating the heart out of those watermelons.
