About two years ago Virgil Moore got a pup he liked. We talked about her and I said if she turned into anything I'd buy her. She did and I did, so she will run in derby stakes this fall.
She's a lot of dog and real pretty going. She's by Hendrix's Signiture (son of Strut) out of Hendrix's Outlier.

Now the stuff. Got a call to report on the progress of my dogs up north. Virgil said Eddie made a huge cast and was stacked up on the edge of a small slew or water way in the pasture. Looked like perfect place for a pheasant to hunker down. Rode to him and saw only a foot or so between Eddie and the water, Stepped in to flush and out boiled a momma duck and her 6 ducklings that Virgil said were flying on the water. Eddie took actual flight after the chicks and Virgil took another step to catch Eddie and sunk up to his knees in muck. Now that's bad enough but boots came off when he tried to extract himself then up to the elbow getting the boots out. The life of a shooting dog handler isn't all glamour grin

Maggie looks good! How many dogs did you send north this year, and how is the bird crop?

Sent two trial dogs. With Maggie I now have three. The reports I'm getting are good, better than last couple of years. Seeing and pointing lots of young chickens and some young pheasants. (and a few ducks) Should be getting better now that the harvest should be complete. Only negative is some hot afternoons.

Lying is lying. Don't bitch about one doing it and condone another. That's called hypocrisy.

Cool!

What does it cost to campaign a dog?

Way to much. You pay for training, entry fees, vet, and get none of the winnings. So for the owner its stud fees, pups or sell the dog. But finding and developing the right pup, that's what makes it fun for me. But not a good way to make a profit.

Love the chicken find pic. I bet its a blast to watch a big running derby dog eat up that country and then slam to a point.

I kept britts on a pros truck for several years. I never added it up but around 10-12k per year would probably be close..

I would imagine top shooting dogs and all age dogs probably double that. Then there's horses, horse stuff, trucks, gas, motels...

But not seeing yours for 10 minutes, and riding over top of the hill and seeing him standing way down there...priceless.

For those who wonder what it looks like up north(SD/ND line) here's a pic of breakaway with a view. It's hard to see but lot of the courses are alfalfa fields etc that have been cut. Up on a horse you can see a dog a long way off. And lots of young chickens and pheasants.

Just an update on my girl Maggie. COVID caused some date changes and cancellations so Virgil had a week and a half open. Took four or five dogs to Abilene Ks for an AA trial. Maggie placed in the derby with a big, fancy race and a find she didn't handle flawlessly. But one for one. And biggest deal was the picture with Stan Wint standing her up. Stan is a Bird Dog Hall of Fame inductee, but most will remember him for his dogs including Honky Tonk Attitude.

Just got off the phone and she placed in the SW Missouri Open SD CH. derby today. Fall derbies are about potential and that was Maggies saving grace today. Her usual big fancy race and two covey finds. You could say she's not quite broke yet as she moved both. But 2 for 3 and a real good start to the season.

I know Mr Wint and watched Bull win a lot of stakes. He was some bird dog. Stan is a great guy too. Congrats on Maggie. Sounds like she is coming along just fine. cheers
