We’re putting together a centerfire steel match nothing over 30 caliber.
Saturday September 19th. 500 yard tournament style shooting match double elimination. starts at 8 a.m. be there at 7:30 for shooters meeting . $30 per person 50% payback. Match will be shot prone or from the bench shooter's choice. We are only taking 16 shooters so let me know if you are coming so I can get a head count .
We will be shooting at three different size targets first is an 8-inch Target for one point next is a 6-inch Target for two points and the last is a 4 inch Target for three points. Object is to score more points then the guy you are shooting against in five shots
Front bipod and rear sandbag only , location in valley view Texas.

I got 3rd in the last one and shot 35 rounds. I'd say bring 60-90 just to be sure and sometimes if there are bye spots open, shooters that have already been eliminated are allowed to buy back in.

I am thinking about changing the 16-man bracket to a 20-man bracket double elimination. What do you guys think , I do not want to end up with a bunch of cancellations though.

How does that work? Thought it needed to be 16 or 32 shooters.

I found this. It's a little hard to follow in the beginning it will be tough for the score keeper at first but I think we can handle it. https://images.app.goo.gl/THbJiSqp1rtu7yxP7

It works. Google will give you bracket chart for almost any double elimination you can make up.

Looks good! If you need anyone to take a bye, I'd be happy to. Only byes will probably be first round if any. After that you’re allowed to buy back in if you’ve been eliminated and there is a bye spot open.

There is only a buyback if we do not have 20 shooters which means there is an open slot. So if you lose twice you would have the opportunity to buy back in.

I probably wasn’t paying attention, but what is the address of the shoot, and do we pay upon arrival or ahead of time?

6.5 CM, this will be first time out for this gun. Have loads worked up for testing. I don't even have it on paper. Remington 5R with trigger tech trigger, Defensive Edge break, Leupold Mark 4 tatictal 4.5 X 14. I know it's hot but I gotta go shoot.

7-08 home built Salvage. Spun a Proof Research stainless barrel on and an Area 409 Sidewinder. Home modified Accustock, EGW 20, and a SS 5-20. Still the factory trigger I hate. No loads developed as of yet. I did get as far as priming brass though if that counts. Need a cheek riser. It’s not comfortable, I may just use an old towel. Who knows.

Didn’t Kyle Ricky Bobby some a couple of years ago that took him out of a match? Oh yeah, that was scale issues, wink wink nod.
Plus I want to have Chad make my ammo for the match so I can beat him with his ammo.
Kidding guys, I’m so far behind loading and four year’s out of practice I may show up with a box core-loks.

In my normal procrastination fashion I waited to load my rounds the night before the match. Only have 7 bullets.... Ran to Academy the next morning and they actually had the 143 ELDx factory loads. So I grabbed two boxes and headed to the range. Didn't check zero with new ammo, just laid down and shot it. I was first by the way. Think I snuck one hit in and my day was done LOL.

I just got my 308 back a couple weeks ago from the gunsmith. The fresh coat paint/cerakote is definitely going to make it faster and more accurate. At least that what I learned during my car days.
Trying to decide whether I shoot my standard load of 178 eld @ 2650 fps or this really cool load I just tested of 155vld @ 2940 fps. I think I might go the vld route for fun.

I would go the 178 for wind. If it’s accurate and known it could make the difference. Of course if you’re in for fun like me then Hail Mary the 155s. Not that much different at 500.

Alot of shooting is still very hypothetical for me but...according to strelok and the basic inputs I have, it says there is only about 0.06mil difference at 500 yards in 10mph cross wind. All I ever do is just shoot groups at a range so this is one of the few opportunities for me put theory to the test. Besides, 2940 fps in a 308 just seems awesome to me.

Senior, I have to bail out. I won't be able to make it. I have had something come up I will need to attend with my son. Plus I want to have Chad make my ammo for the match so I can beat him with his ammo. I would be proud to be beat with my own ammo (which has happened a few times). But you would need to have your big boy britches on for the match to make that happen!

Buzz wants to shoot one of those 5,000 lb. bench rifles that has to be delivered with a trailer and fork lift! Let him bring it. We’ve had a few guys bring out the truck axel barrel rifles and didn’t make it out of the first round. Those boys were not happy. Think Buzz was referring to rest. Buzz it’s front bipod and rear bag, no mechanical rest.

I was going to shoot a 6mm BR, Heavy Bench gun but no sling swivel stud or pic rail, so I'm stuck with my crappy 6.5 Creedy. Like I said above. I have 100 rounds loaded, so enough for 2 years of these 500 yard matches

Finally made some trial loads this morning. Now if I only had a place to shoot on a Sunday morning. I don’t think my neighbors would appreciate it. Looks like it’ll be Tuesday morning to shoot after I get off work then load the best of it.

Well count me out. Just went out to load up my rounds. Let my chargmaster warm up for 30 or so minutes filled it with powder and the damn throw arm won’t turn. Poured the powder out cleaned everything recalibrated threw an empty load just to make sure the arm would turn. It did but very slowly. Filled it back with powder and went to throw a charge. Nothing.... pushed the powder tube in pretty hard and it started turning but only threw 37.x grains and stopped. Will not auto trickle and will not manual trickle.
Looks like it’s going back to RCBS and I’m sitting at home Saturday lol. Good luck everyone you’ll need it, lots of good shooters coming.

Kyle has been burned by different scales though Fitz. I see why he is backing out lol I've got an A&D scale that measures down to .02 grns. They'll be more consistent than his loads off a chargemaster.

That’s why I love this forum. Tim how long would it take to load them up? Trying to figure out logistics of coming to Prosper today or tomorrow.

The queen is trying to decide if she want to go with me or stay at the hotel. Her deciding question is, “is there a potty available?”

The first choice is what I feel like doing right now but might void the warranty. I’ve read that RCBS is great with stuff even out of warranty so I’ll hold off smashing it just yet. I don’t even know where my beam scale is. I have a really good one, but I’m so pissed right now my loads would probably be all over the place. Also last time I switched scales before a match I got the nickname Ricky Bobby because I almost blew up my gun once is enough for me. Kyle, did you mistake that dipper for a hammer? Why do you repeatedly insist on reloading right before a match? Although, I have learned a good bit from you, thanks Kyle Ricky. You'll be missed.

The good thing about loading your own ammo is when you need ammo, you go make it. The bad thing about loading your own ammo, is when you need more, you gotta go load it!

On the last minute train myself. Today I have to start over on load development, pick a load, load em, get the velocity, and be in the road to Gainesville by 2 or 3. If today’s loads suck as bad as yesterdays I’m going to show up, pay my fee, and chunk rocks.

Almost gave up. Came up with a good load but the ES is 10. We will see. And yes it’s only 3 shots but I did it two different times. Lol. Almost the same load I was shooting before. 39.8 now, old rifle was 39.7. I think JG shoots 39.8 in this combo as well. That’s Varget and 162 Amax.

But are you sure that is 39.8??? Looks an awful lot like 38.8 to me. You should probably go work it up again.

But are you sure that is 39.8??? Looks an awful lot like 38.8 to me. You should probably go work it up again. Yeah I got dyslexia today. Lol. Let’s call it 40.8 for good measure. Idk. What ever that was I built 55 of those.

I am going to add something to the match tomorrow. This will be shooter's choice to participate. We are going to have a cold bore challenge first thing in the morning before the match starts. This will be a side pot it will cost you $10 to take one shot at 500 yd at an orange dot on a piece of paper. Closest to Center wins the pot . In case of a tie the shooters that tied will shoot again.

Negative , I’ll go watch one of these days Hell if you don’t have a rifle for it, get the vudoo out, you might actually compete pretty well at 500 with it lol. Would be bad [censored] to beat a bunch of centerfires with a 22LR.

One spot opened up, and my 13 yr old daughter is going to shoot that spot! She's excited, to say the least. Me too.

As you can imagine there’s nothing open in Gainesville at 4:30 in the morning that sells heating protection. Gotta wait on Walmart.
Edit: QT came through.

You didn't have some type of hearing protection?

Perfect day for the shoot and great to meet some new people and catch up with friends. Thanks Senior for running another great match. I sucked, no other words can describe it. Even with Senior spotting for me, I managed to shoot a really nice and tight group...just to the right of my target. I did kid him about being bad luck and sure he was thinking I was deaf and not listening to his calls. Was really cool to see two young ladies (13 or 14) just wear out the targets, they were awesome!
I was wrong...on anything technical. Fitz............. is right, ya know............

Forgot to mention, Kyle beat me in the first round. He looked taller today...think he was wearing heightners (reference Seinfeld).

We also had a great time. Thank you again Senior for hosting a great shoot! I also sucked but did manage to win the cold bore shoot first thing. It was all luck. I thought the day was looking up but was all downhill from there.

Ya'll, that was awesome!! We had a great time. As we were leaving, my daughter asked, "When's the next one!" She had a great time also. She managed to beat me today. Good times.
Thank you Senior, for putting the match on. I didn't get to say goodbye, as you were painting targets when we left. Thanks, again!

Forgot to mention, Kyle beat me in the first round. He looked taller today...think he was wearing heightners (reference Seinfeld). Yep great time if it weren’t for my damn allergies. I sucked it up today think a combination of new scope, a little different ammo, and cleaning my gun the night before did me in today. Good to see everyone and [censored] between rounds. Always a fun time. Looks like Tony got first, Cowie got second, and Chris got third. Good job Chris.

Well, believe it or not I made this shoot !!! First round, I went to the loser bracket. As usual Second round I shot a 7 which for me is excellent, But alas, a sweet young lady which I was shooting against, shot and 8 !!! I don't mind getting beat by a young lady at all, I'm talking young.....like 13 !!!!!! It was a great, SAFE match, all the shooters were pro's handling their Rifles. Senior , you are a great spotter !!!!! even though I drew you in my firs round, You were kind and only took 4 of your 5 shots to send me to the L.B But really you and your wife who graciously kept the scores, put on a great match, and I'm already ready for another. (I got plenty of ammo left) Chris (P102) deserves comeback shooter of the year, really shooting great centerfire AND .22LR Korean Redneck drove all the way from Houston, great too see him and many other THF'ers and S&S guys (great shooters !) I don't think I got DAL. But I ain't givin her up

Fitz is right, perfect day for a shoot! Thanks, Senior, for putting this on and even more for being a great spotter! Good to see Fitz and Buzz again and to meet a few others. I’m with wp, forgot the muffs and plugs just don’t cut it with most guns sporting brakes.....spent a lot of time with my fingers in my ears.

Senior, thanks for having us. Love the place and had a great time.
The weather was great, at least coming from Houston, and the company was equally awesome. This day was a great learning opportunity for me and look forward to doing it again. Thanks to all.

Thank you for all the compliments. It was only doable with the help of my wife ,Tony , David and others. It was a very safe shoot and that was due to all the shooters. Thank you guys. It was a fun day even though I sucked shooting. Most of all I enjoyed screwing Tim. L M A O . wp75169 stayed after the match and I think we have his gun rocking and rolling now . I sent Kyle a picture of the bracket, he will have to publish it on here as I am not smart enough .

I forgot one thing I wanted to give a shout out to Travis Frazier with Field & cave outfitters he donated some more AR steel to the range. We have been shooting his AR steel for years and it is awesome and he has a very excellent price on it if anybody is interested.
