Can anyone school me on hunting the Old Sabine Bottoms WMA ?? I drive by it all the time, have seen it in my hunting annual and have thought many times about trying to hunt it. Just from the looks and the location, I'm sure that it is a mosquito heaven and they love to chew on me. Just really looking to go out there and prowl around and do some scouting and see what I can find. I have a hunting lease for deer but would really like a few more chances at hogs. I don't have a boat to use there so if it is a must then I am out. I am a bit older hunter so I don't have the drive that i once did but anything that you could share would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Jimmy

There's a guy on here that talks funny that can tell you lots about the area if you can understand him. Also, I think White Falcon hunts there often.

I hunted there once and it seems the success rate is under 20%. If you're close by then it might be worth the effort.

Colt 45 is the man!! There are hogs but hard hunting most of the time. Lots of snakes, skeeters, ticks and spiders.

I hear if you want to kill a hog it is the place to go. If you want to kill a deer, probably not, I hear it ranks among the worst deer public draws. I have never been so no help other than what I read about the place on various forums.

Usta live just down the road, for 30+years, roughly 10miles as crow flies..
Can't give no up dates... Living in MN.
Tis thinking you traveling (what i call Hoard Rd) Whin first
opened up, it was the West boundry line. They opened the
section West of it later...

Area is due ta flooding. White Falcon can give ya heads up for that info.
It usta be a hunting lease, one of the most sout after leases in
Smith Co. Way more than what i could afford, & had a waiting list ta get on.
First year it opened started hunting it, mainly hogs, had deer lease, not to far from were
White Falcon lives. Zain & i hunted east ta west ends, often wadeing past our knees.
Gave up leases, they got two expensive, then son joined Marines flag
So mostly huntsolo, Have good friend from an old lease, tried talking inta hunting WMA's.
We hunted few others. But he liked the leases, up
If not mistaken, every time we hunted OSB we seen hogs..
Got on this forum, ta see if any one wanted ta do some hog hunts, on WMA's ...
rofl most have me on thar ignorance list... cheers

Did the archery deer/hog hunts, had food plot, corn feeders down by creek just south of house for gun hunts,
till shoulders went out..
It first opened, had seen as many as 100 hogs going threw woods, from 300+ta wee wee little ones.
Ya had ta get back in thar 1+ or more..
Fastest hunt, took roughly 15mins, had 3hogs down... Farthest hog twas over 3miles as crow fliers.. That's were seen
most hogs, going threw thickest, farthers area's . Again have seen plenty close ta parking areas.
My situation been mostly being right time right area... & further back less hunters, hogs didn't feel preasured..
Switch cain, palmeda plants, tall grass, downed trees, lots of them..
They have wallows, & can see were hogs & deer lay in shade...
My AR was set up with laser under, & mil-dot scope over, for close range had set up by creek @ my place, 20-yrds.
Majority of my hog hunts were after, deer/hog archery, (Jan-endMarch)...
Cooler weather, just enjoyed me walk-a-bout... take it nice & slow, step, keep eyes roaming for anything moving...
& since it mainly archery deer, over the years have seen over 20 mature bucks, over the 13+inch, & if a D- educated yankee like me can find em, tis sure most ya'll can too...
Again did me hog, hunt & scouting in the 3 months, lots of info...
Caried GPS in fanny pack, with me cannon camera, & pen & pocket size not book, & wrote down info...
Later. put info on my TOPO USA..

Hunted several WMA's using me gps & scout @ home topoUSA...
Hunters are the eyes & ears of the woods...
They have some trail cams out, usdta, & i have had mine...
Never had problem with stuff taken... & the guys that work thar, up up up

realize my posts CAN be tough ta read, my bad. tis just how i type...
Left out the mojo's ...
rofl if ya want more specific info, can PM, ya areas i have had great sucsess..
Then again, i was in right place, right time...
It so easy, rofl a muyloco a caveman (what they called me @ work) can do it...

It does stay pretty wet... i used used tennishoes, easeing threw the woods...

Best wish's, even with failing health, would still de doing me hog hunts, in Jan-endof March...
Keep your head held high & your powder dry...
Ya'll dont realize how good ya gots it, 24-7-365 hog hunts ? & ya had hogs down on the creek (branch).
They followed the creeks whin OSB flooded.
Had my cam's set up ta get best times ta hunt, & stayed on them, kept em in check, whin neighbors dogs didnt run em off... & started seeing more deer...
Still took me bow in hand & took a stand for derr hunts...

Nice post colt.45. I have seen more hogs near 1804 parking area, and by both bridges. There are good signs and trails. Don't see many people all year there. As colt said, walk slow and look next to down falls and thick areas. I would use snake boots if you plan on getting off the trails.

It's a real hard hunt! No salt blocks, no food plots, no corn piles, and no feeders.

back Jan-end of March Hog hunts any legal meens...
Cooler weather... Go @ your own pace...
With limited hunting pressure, as White Falcon posted NO baiting, & no night hunts, the surrounding 24-7-365 hunting pressure makes it a hot spot...
i'm 60+ with alien body parts, back, shoulders, & knees. yet would still be wondering about the woods hog hunter
Just know your limits...
Ta most on here my posts ain't worth 2cents money talks, low-income here... i didnt have extra $200.00+ ta pay
ta go help out, with others problems...
