Watching Gunbroker is kind of a hobby for me. People are paying outrageous prices for ammo and guns. Most of buyers are new to gunbroker.

More and more Americans are buying firearms for the first time this year. Loading them is a different story.

“Some of the frustration we’ve frankly heard from some of the new users is that they bought a firearm, they can’t find any ammunition, because it’s in short supply,” Vista Outdoor Inc. CEO Christopher Metz said on the company’s quarterly earnings call on Thursday.

The spike in gun sales follows a wave of civil unrest after the death of George Floyd, an unarmed black man in police custody, as well as an increase in outdoor recreation amid COVID-19 lockdowns. Firearms enthusiasts are also prepping for the possibility of stricter regulations should former Vice President Joe Biden ride a blue wave to an election victory in November.

Gun sales surged 135% year-over-year in July to about 2 million and have already matched all of last year, according to a report released earlier this week by research consultancy Small Arms Analytics and Forecasting. Sales were up 145% in June, 80% in May and 71% in April.

Ammo sales, however, typically take “multiple months to catch up” to gun sales, according to Metz, which could lead to even tighter supplies in the months ahead.

Sales of ammunition at Vista Outdoor, based in Anoka, Minnesota, rose 22 percent year-over-year during the most recent quarter, which ended in June. The maker of outdoor recreation equipment kept that business after selling its Savage Arms and Stevens firearms brands in 2019.

but I just bought some .22 for $1.95 a box. A few years ago, I couldn't even find .22.

If the number of people showing up at gun ranges these days in any indication, they're finding and buying a lot of ammo somewhere.

My range had a 'LIMIT of 2' sign on their ammo racks, and they were only selling it if you were shooting it right then. Things are definitely tight. I tripped through Academy looking for something else and noticed the ammo shelves were more bare than I'd ever seen.

I stood in line at Academy waiting for them to open on Tuesday morning. We were first in line out of about 15 people. When the doors opened it was a mad dash to the ammo isle and all the 9mm was gone within 2 minutes. That being said we each got the 3 boxes limit with 50 in a box. They were $11.99 a box or .24 cents a round, and were brass not steel. The guy at the counter said they were made by CCI, but the boxes were pretty plain without much writing on them at all.

I’ll be loading 9mm, 380, and 223 next week. I never intended to load 380, but just buy the white box stuff. Good plan. Bad execution.

Yeah they said the Beruit plant that killed many with COVID has sent ammo prices through the sky and dirt. And everywhere.

A couple weeks ago we had two pallets full of 9mm and 5.56 hit the dock, by 11:30 it was gone with a 5 box max purchase. Still don't have any on the shelves.
