If you have children who are 16 or under and need to take Hunter Education, crunch time is here. And with the COVID situation making it harder for instructors to find facilities to host classes, finding an opening may be difficult. Remember, kids who are 16 or under are required to take either 1) the one-day classroom course, or 2) the half-day Field Course combined with the special online course. Either way, members of this younger group cannot earn certification by taking the online course alone. For more information, click on the link below. TPWD Hunter Education

For anyone not in the know... LINKWho needs to take Hunter Education? Every hunter (including out-of-state hunters) born on or after Sept. 2, 1971, must successfully complete hunter education. Minimum age for certification is 9 years and cost is $15. If you were born on or after September 2, 1971 and you are: -under 9 years of age, you must be accompanied*. -age 9 through 16, you must successfully complete hunter education, OR you must be accompanied. -age 17 and over, you must successfully complete hunter education; OR purchase a “Hunter Education Deferral,” and you must be accompanied.

Another bullsht law. I wish the government would come up with more. Eh, I’m typically on the side of less government regulation on anything but hunter safety just like boaters safety saves lives and I’m happy that people need to take it.

I'm planning on providing a class in October in Dickens county. With the minimal infections (4) in the county hoping with social distancing I can get some participation. Youths 16 and under can hunt with a licensed hunter who has taken hunter education as required. This Corona has made things difficult for us all.

We had a hunters Ed class in high school.
It’s a PITA getting my kids into the field course study. Really makes it hard
For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.

Another bullsht law. I wish the government would come up with more. Stats don't lie and since HE became mandatory the stats reflect that hunter deaths have dropped - nationwide. It's a good deal if you take it seriously.

My son will be in the class this Saturday in Crowley. He passed! He’s 9 years old. The instructor allowed me to take the test as well just to see how I’d do. There were several question I thought would be difficult for a 9 year old but he got through it. I was very proud.

There were other other parents there as well.

In a weird way; I think it’s good and bad. I’ve seen young guys above the age of 17, who wanted to go on their first hunting trip, not go because of the restriction. They are lost for good. And no! This generation and at that age will not take the time. And the stats prove the hunting population is dying. Less hunters means less deaths. And this group of hunters only hunts the first two weekends of dove season vs hunters in the past.

And the stats prove the hunting population is dying. Unfortunately, that's an undeniable fact based on numbers nationwide.
