Had one seven years ago and took 14 days to pass it. Got a bigger one Saturday evening and the doc took it out Wednesday night. Feel better in some ways, but worse in others...especially with the kidney stent the doc left in place. While not nearly as painful as the stone by a longshot, this is generally the most uncomfortable I think I've been in my life. I'm supposed to pull the stent out on my own on Monday. Just thinking about it makes me nauseous. Anyone ever been through this stent thing before? How was it removing it yourself? Doc acts like it's no big deal...

Doc pulled mine out. Never mentioned option on doing it myself. Hurt like heck but only last a couple of seconds. Youll live. I cant remember mine hurting while it was in. Not a lot for sure..... When i got that stone i realized how much i hated pain. I dont even like to take aspirin much less drugs but she kept giving me more meds than supposed to without telling me cause i was hurting so bad.

After my second round with them I quit drinking sodas and you will rarely find me without a water bottle in my hand.

Where is the stent...or should I ask? My stone was blasted out but that was probably 15 years ago.
Never mind...I googled it. Ouch and no thanks!

Exactly. Anyway, I made sure I had fresh stock of meds today and medicated up about an hour prior. Told all my buds that it was probably gonna be like Wesley in the Pit of Despair...that if they hear screaming, seemingly coming from miles away, that's what was going on. Well, the moment of truth came and while it wasn't the most pleasant thing I've ever done, it was WAY better than I was expecting it to be. Not much pain, but TOTALLY pegged my Weird Meter. I laid it out on a towel, took a pic and sent it to my wife. I don't drink that many soft drinks overall. I drink much more coffee and tea, and water. Doc is going to analyze it and has done some labs to see what's going on and see how we can prevent them. I know if I get another one, we're going to get it ASAP. I'm done suffering while waiting for it to pass. My stones aren't that large, but they're either built like a goat head or I've got the smallest ureters in the world. P.S. The male urethra is the most sensitive tissue on the planet. Take that one to the bank.

I've broken bones and not hurt as bad as having things go through the man spout. Most stones are essentially small pieces of broken yellow glass. The last one was too big and they had to go in and break it into passable bits. Before my hospital trip, I had that black and white tunnel vision you get just before you pass out. It's worse than getting a dried in catheter pulled out after being in a week

Try AZO if it burns when you pee. Helped me with after my last catheter use.

Had a total of 5 once and the Doc said one was between 8mm and 9mm on a scan. Was tearing the heck out of me and couldn't pass it. So they used some sort of ultrasound device to break them up. Felt like I was PI$$ING gravel for about 3 days. Haven't had any since and don't want any. Painful things.

Morphine was the only thing that helped me. They blasted mine the following day. Peed into a strainer for a few days but never caught any pieces. Nurse said pain is equivalent to giving birth.

I had percocet, dilaudid, and demerol, sometimes multiple doses at a time, and this pain just waltzed right through that opioid medley of happiness. This pain makes grown men cry. Im glad its over for you. I figured you would live. Thanks for the update. Thank you, sir. I appreciate you chiming in.

Felt like I was PI$$ING gravel for about 3 days. Haven't had any since and don't want any. Painful things. Been there. I had two right on top of each other... big ones like yours. 9mm and a 7mm behind. They brought me to my knees numerous times and were always mis diagnosed as diverticulosis. It finally got so bad that I got sick on the living room floor and thought I was about to die. The procedure is called lithotripsy where they bust them up and then you pee them sand burrs out. Hurts like heck, but keep pushing hard as you can and don’t stop midstream. They gave me a strainer to pee through so I could catch them and then they send them off to the lab and find out what they are made of. Mine were calcium. Too much cheese and milk and not enough water. I drink water all the time now... loads of it. Good news is... once you pizz the one piece you are working on getting out, then the pain shuts off like a light switch.

If you have kidney stones regularly, there is a simple, effective method to eliminate having the stones. INCREASE YOUR INTAKE OF CITRUS ACID. Add lemon juice to your liquids, such as water, tea. Doesn't take a lot of citric acid just daily doses. If you like sodas, drink clear sodas such as 7-up or other brands. Look at the list of ingredients, make sure CITRUS ACID IS LISTED. After 20+ years of kidney stones sometimes on a yearly basis, I started following my Urologists suggestion, has been 10 years with no stones. My daily citrus acid drink is store bought GREEN TEA. I sometimes add some lemon juice to my black tea. I have had stones as big as 13 mm and multiple stones at the same time in the past, and stones in BOTH kidneys at the same time. FUN, FUN, FUN.

I have had kidney stents in me more than once but the DR. always pulled the stents. My stents went from the kidney to the bladder, so there was no way for me to pull the stents myself, However, it was no big deal, I was wide awake and no pain meds given. Just the thought was stent being pulled was worse that the actual procedure, I had open heart surgery on the 13 of july and a nurse pulled the staples (38) 2 weeks after the surgery in my home. Heart Dr. had told me it would be a walk in the park and he was correct, however I did not believe him till the nurse had pulled 3-4 of the staples with no ill effects to me!!

Have had more stones than I care to remember and a couple in the 9mm range. I pound water now and do a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar twice a day with a glass of water. Passing this bad boy was no fun. A bit over 9mm.

Passed a few and had them blasted twice. Last time I had one blasted was last August on left side that was too big to pass. Peed gravel for a few days and it was over and I could walk upright again. About 3 months later I passed one out of right side and had to go to ER for that one...no fun but passed it without intervention on Drs part other than pain meds so that was good.

First time I had one I didn't know what it was couldn't stand upright, wife had to help me to the car to go to the ER .Im 59 and that's the worst pain I've ever encountered.I have had several more since then Dr. said I wasn't drinking enough fluids he ask me did I drink beer I told him every now and then he said a couple every night would help keep them flushed out, never thought I would here a Dr. tell me to drink. He told me to keep water with me all day long and keep hydrated.Havent drank a Coke in probably 15 years l try to do what he said that pain is something I would wish on no one not even my worst enemy.Had the Stent put in wasn't to bad (good drugs) removal was quite painful (no drugs). Every morning I start off with a tall glass of ice water I try to drink twice the amount of water as coffee in the morning. Its a battle but anything is better than that pain.!!

Thanks for sharing, gents. I'm loving life not dealing with that pain anymore. My stent was the same as described above (kidney to bladder), but mine also had a little string attached to some bandaging for easy pulling five days post-surgery. I think it's a relatively new thing for patients to pull their own, but I read a few studies where it reduced health care costs without increasing risk for the patient.
