This is an area that I didn’t have much interest in, but things change. I shoot the 65 gr Sierra GK in my 9 twist, but will going to a 7 twist give me any real upgrade in effective pig shooting bullets? What have you guys had success with, or should I just stick with the 65 gr GK?

AR?

I think the 75 Gold Dot would be a winner.

I'd say this would be a great choice.

That Gold Dot should shoot fine from a 9 twist I would think.

THe 75gr I have shot hogs and deer with and great results is Swift Sirocco, but those do cost a good bit more than some other great options. I was also thinking about 3400 or so fps from a 22-243 so ...

Gold dot should work very well and I might try them once my supply of Siroccos run low.

From looking up the ballistics and the slow velocity from a rather short barrel, I’m now thinking I should stick with the 65 gr Sierra or the 60 gr Partition at a higher MV.

Nosler has the 70 grain Accubond, and it would also be a great choice for a 7 twist. I also recommend the 75 grain Speer GD. The 62 grain is nice!

Might look at the 62gr Sirocco as well. Bonded copper and lead bullet,

Shoot em with whatever shots best out of your rifle. It really doesn’t matter, shoot em in the ear with anything and they die immediately...

Well, that’s a good plan, but only if you get the chance to put it there. And if the pig is close enough that you can make the shot.

It 100% matters. I shot a big boar with 68 grain Hornady BTHP bullets from a 16" AR. I shot him 9 times, 2 in the head. The bullets were flattening out and had ZERO penetration. It took him down but he still had plenty of spunk left and had to be finished off with a 357. Bullet choice is important, and it's even more critical in low power rounds, like the 223.

I go to a more premium bullet that will hold together and penetrate well, when it comes to a 223. The best bullet I have found in the 223 was the 64 grain Nosler bonded. That one has been my tops.

As I go smaller in caliber and/or faster in velocity the more prone I am to go to bonded bullets or partition bullets. These days we have more of those bullets to choose from than in the past. When the Trophy bonded 55 gr bullets came out in .224 diameter I switched to them in the 223 and 22-250 with good results, the 64gr bonded from Nosler is basically the same bullet only heavier (not a bad thing)

Chad: Do you have any experience/opinion on the 65gr Sierra GK? thanks

I loaded and shot the 65 grain SGK for my son to shoot deer and pigs with. It worked ok for most of the animals we shot. The last doe he shot was a little far back behind the shoulder, and clipped part of the stomach area with that bullet. Shot was about 70 yards, and the bullet did not exit. The bullet didn't make it to the other side of the skin. There was no blood or anything and we found the doe about 100 yards away bedded down and I finished her off with my blk out. With good shot placement, it works. But I wanted a tougher bullet and an exit wound, if possible, with a 223. I switched to the 64 grain Nosler bonded bullets. My daughter shot a doe broadside at about 110 yards last season with the 64 grain and it did perfect. We got a dime size exit and full penetration. The deer ran about 50 yards, and had good blood trail. Once she found the trail, it was easy to follow. I got in a bunch of the 70 grain AB bullets to try also. I'm sure these would do well also. For hunting with a 223 for deep penetration, that 64 grain Nosler has done great for me so far.

I thought Nosler had quit making that 64 gr bonded bullet.

I think they did and midway shows you can still add them to the cart. Also they show Swift 62 gr Sirocco in stock, those are some good bullets that have served me well in the 22-243 running higher velocities than you will get in the 223. Good bullets

Thanks. I wound up with several boxes as part of a deal. Very accurate in my AR. Was planning on using them to help control the pig population. Sounds like they should be ok for that, and perhaps a doe or two 😊

I have had pretty good luck using the 75 gr, Hornady HPBT match bullet. Actually seems a bit tough, many make it all the way through medium sized pigs. It is my standard bullet in my 1-7 twist AR's, great accuracy.

65GR Gameking. It still works. If you’re shooting deer with a 22, shoot them in the neckbone or the forehead. The best thing to do is whistle, when they look at you shoot them between the eyes, If you’re sitting in a blind. If you do this with your 223 it won’t matter what bullet you are shooting.
