In 32 yrs. of living in Comal County, we have never had a rattlesnake, copperhead or any other venomous snake in our yard. Except for the type below. We kill 1 or 2 a year out here. With 3 dogs in the yard and sometimes a grandkid, these fellow never get a free walk from here.

Dead or alive? grin Have got quite a few of them around here, with little ones in the yard they get their head shopped off. I pinned one down and let it bite my boot, was really surprised how much venom came out and how fast it happened. Goes against everything I ever heard about them.

In over 50 years afield I've seen exactly one coral snake in the wild.

But encountered about a half dozen at the home/property where I grew up....which was then the Suburbs of Austin, Texas.

There is a lot of misinformation about coral snakes out there.

I.E.

1. They can only bite small places like the tips of fingers or webbing of the hand.
2. They have to 'chew' for awhile to inject any venom.

Etc...

They can open their mouths (small as they may be) plenty wide enough to bite a person just about anyplace they'd like to.

I doubt there is much antivenin around in the event someone is bitten. I've never seen one in the wild.

I’ve killed a couple here over the years. One was at a rent house in the canyon north of campus. The other was on the back porch at the current house. Son stepped over it barefoot, coming out of the garage. Neither got a pass.

That is correct, and yes they can really open their mouths up wide. The one I'm talking about bit my boot on the top & the side, both of it's little jaws were pressed flat against my boot. I've got some family here now that moved down from Arkansas, the kids are used to running around barefoot. I'm on them all of the time about putting some dang shoes on as I've killed and spotted several corals right here in the yard by the house. I have always heard that antivenom for them is almost non-existent. I'm a snake person, but don't want a kid bit by one either.

What is it about that state and not wearing shoes?

A coral snake is how I learned my Ruger DC91 won't cycle shot shells.

LOL, they spent too much time out in the boonies/Ozarks. Beautiful country though.

Been a long time but I heard their venom was more potent than most vipers and the reason there are not more deaths is because they are so small and do not inject a lot of venom into their prey?

Their venom is a neurotoxic venom similar to cobras and kraits. There is sometimes a delayed reaction before the venom overwhelms the respiratory system. The volume of venom is not as great as those larger snakes but very deadly. The skin damage does not occur unless secondary infection takes place. I had several in my snake owning days but they were difficult to feed. I believe the anti venom is hard to get because it didn't pay to manufacture it due to lack of bites in the US. and now there are some supplies in Florida where many types of neurotoxic venomous snakes are imported and in some zoos. It is deadly and should be treated carefully around children since they can be drawn to the pretty colors.

They do have small fixed fangs but this can be a mixed blessing as one might feel the bite is not serious when in a few hours it will be serious indeed!

we live just west of Georgetown, very rocky with lots of cedars except in our yard (St. Augustine). we have lived here 21 years and only saw/killed 1 very small rattlesnake but probably 15-18 coral snakes. We usually find them after a rain or watering the grass when they surface on top of the grass. My blue heeler has a heck of a nose on her and she finds them by stuffing her muzzle down into the grass and pulling them out where I can take care of them. The largest one I have killed was slightly over 2 feet long and I didn't think they got that big. I used to not bother with them but with 4 grandkids running around a lot of the time barefoot, they no longer get a pass.

No cactus or mesquite too.
