It was a slow night with a goodly amount of rain and lightning. I had yet to see a hog despite checking several properties. Was between St. Jo and Forestburg in Montague County and doing about 60-65 mph when I saw movement on the road. I let up on the gas as I realized it was a sounder of hogs crossing. Real quick it was obvious there was going to be a collision. There were 6 or so on the road with a big one just entering my lane from the bar ditch. I did a slight correction to miss it an nailed a 90 lb sow on the center stripe. I braked and turned around to check the carnage. The sow was unresponsive at the scene and I pronounced her dead at just after 1:00 am. I moved her into the bar ditch and I suspect roadside services were held after I left.

The 2007 Toyota Tundra fared well. Most of the impact was on the driver side with the bumper, skid plate, and both driver side wheels taking the impact. Steering seemed okay. No new lights came up on the dash. There was a little bumper push back, but otherwise, the truck seems mechanically sound. Will check it out later to make sure no fluids are leaking or anything unusual. The skid plate was a heavy duty replacement for my last one that I purchased last month. It handled the task well. Found a few hog hairs stuck in the little door of the skid plate that gives access to change the oil. This may have been a good investment, LOL.

Now, just waiting for the wife to find out and get an earful...

UPDATE: The battery retainer is the only repairable damage I can find. It snapped in the collision. All in all, not too bad.

Friend of mine hit a cow going 70 mph over a hill on a two lane road. Said the blood was everywhere. He survived, but his F250 did not.

Wow, really? I see them on the road or in the bar ditch at least every other week. I might have to brake or swerve to miss one every couple of months. When I am going slow, going down gravel roads, it isn't really an issue to avoid them. Highway speeds make it more challenging.

This is the 3rd time I have been in real collisions with hogs, but the first time as the driver.

Sure glad that there was no bodily damage to the driver! Hogs don't do runovers real well; much rather hit a deer if I just HAVE to pick a species to play bumper car with. Will you be adding her to the 2020 Hog Total??? :-)

Where I hunt, in Lee County, there was a guy who traveled to work on a motorcycle. He commuted a distance of about 15 miles each way, between Lexington and Rockdale. One morning, about 3-4 years ago, he encountered a sounder of hogs on the road. He was killed.

When Loop 130 initially opened to ease traffic around Austin (with a speed limit of 85 MPH) the first night a motorist ran into a sounder on the highway and died.

They're definitely on the roads. I used to travel to SE Texas to visit family. There's a stretch of road between Winnie and Port Arthur (Hwy 73) on which I'd see a dead hog on the shoulder about every 4th or 5th trip.

A few years ago, I actually did a pretty extensive google search of hog/vehicle and deer/vehicle accidents. What I found was that typically, hogs do damage from the grill and downward. Deer do damage from the grill and upward. I found no examples of hogs coming through windshields. That isn't to say folks weren't hurt in hog/vehicle collisions. Plenty were. Same for deer/vehicle collisions where the deer didn't come through the windshields. In both cases, most of the significant injuries were the result of loss of control of the vehicle AFTER the collision with the animal, sometimes (often?) due to air bag deployment and the vehicles going off into ditches, hitting trees, or hitting other vehicles. Vehicles that stayed on the road and didn't hit other vehicles typically had no or more minor injuries. With that said, typical collisions were with single animals.

I'll add on all my hogs at the end of the year as I figured out that I wasn't being consistent throughout the year and would forget.

I saw a 1-ton service truck hit a pregnant sow (about 130-140lbs prior to the collision) while the truck was going about 80 down an FM road. It totaled the truck, set the airbags off and left the occupants dazed. The sow fared far worse and left quite the skid mark.

Glad to here only minor damage and no injuries Double Naught. The hogs have been active ripping up one of my neighbors lawn this week.

You were very lucky, that is the least damage I have heard of in a hog road kill.

I was with a guy who ran over a 35 pounder with no damage, but at fairly low speed, around 30 mph. I was with the same guy when he hit a couple 45-50 pounders at about 55 mph and did several thousand dollars damage to his truck - bent the frame and shifted things in the engine compartment.

Wow! Glad that turned out mostly ok. My wife and I were heading out to view the comet recently and I caught a glimpse of deer eyes on the side of the road and hit the brakes because we were in my wife's little Focus. Three deer crossed the road right in front of us and as I started to accelerate, a boar about 200 lbs ran right across in front of us about 25 yds past the deer. If I hadn't slowed down for the deer, we might have center punched that boar at 70 mph. It wouldn't have turned out good for us or the car.

Drove through a sounder on the way home one night in my wife's old car. Talk about a wakeup, small car and about a dozen hogs some of which were pretty sizeable I still dont know how we didnt hit one, we missed a couple by what must have been inches. Was doing about 65 on a state highway and they entered the roadway at what must have been a dead run.

Yeah, if you drive around at night, particularly in the rural areas, you are bound to hit something sooner or later.
