Anyone dealt with tennis elbow? MY outer elbow has been hurting for about two months with no signs of getting better. I lift weights every other day, initially hurt it stupidly arm wrestling 20yo who thought he was big stuff at a get together. Think its the last time Ill ever arm wrestle. I guess at 42 Im too old to play stupid games. I really dont want to stop lifting as Im just now back to where I was before the shut down. Anyone try any of the forearms braces that helped?

Both elbows for me. Had surgery on both. Forearm braces do help. Steroid shot provides immediate relief. You have to rest it before it gets worse.

Well, for one thing, if the sore area is the outside of your tennis arm, your stroke mechanics are not right. So I guess the inside muscles are what is sore, if you hurt it arm wrestling. The good news is that the inside muscles will heal faster (in my experience).

Also, switch rackets. The dual core rackets from Volkl are very easy on your arm. I switched to Volkl when I had arm and shoulder problems. The dual core technology softens the impact on the sore muscles. As for which specific Volkl racket, you’d have to find the one that suits your game. I use the C10 Pro these days, but it’s a 12 oz racket. Try the V1 racket (10.8 oz) with Wilson Sensation Comfort (or the Control string) 17 at 56 to 58#. Big sweet spot.

On the string, I have loaned out and given a dozen or more rackets to the high school kids, and as they graduate, they usually return the rackets. One of the graduating seniors gave back 3, two of which were my old tournament rackets, and they were strung with that Wilson Sensation Control 17. For old times sake, I played with them for a bit and was stunned at how soft the rackets felt with that string. I’ve been using Sensation Power 17 and will switch to the control string next.

My old tournament doubles partner finally switched to Volkl and praises them to high heaven. And my Sister in Law, who truly is a poor tennis player, though serious and dedicated, and who always has tennis elbow issues, has finally switched to Volkl. She forgets that I told her to do the switch 5 or 10 years ago.

A steroid shot will fix it.

I wouldn’t get it shot with Cortisone. It’s causes cartilage damage, because it actually kills it.

If you have a degenerative disk disease I’d find a orthopedic that specializes in Stem, and see if it’s right for you.

Just dealt with a bad case of it. Like you trying to show up a teenage athlete. Was successful but paid the price.

Took me damn near 6 months to recover. I would say I’m 90% back to normal now but no pain

I did lay off it. Didn’t do any hammer curls or excel uses requiring a lot of grip

Rest and anti-inflammatories. Below are some resources. Key is consistency as typically the dysfuncction is not in the elbow but a byproduct of a larger issue in the shoulder.
Muscle imbalance or similar. Cortisone shots are a 'band aid' treatment and not a solution.

Elbow Tendonitis Exercises
Another with stretches
Virginia Sports Med.

These guys are goofy but their content is very good.

Get well!

I'm on month 10 or 11 with this now. It has gotten somewhat better but only takes that one thing to knock me back down again...a bump against a door jamb or even catching a fish. I've had two shots which have lasted a week each, but no long term improvement. Had an MRI on Monday and go back to the ortho mid-month to determine the next step.

It’s very slow to heal, due to the low blood flow in that area. Stimulating the blood flow should help - heat, ice, blood thinner, massage. And if you aren’t a kid any more, it’s even slower.

I had surgery on both of mine a few years ago. Can still get inflamed occasionally but nothing like pre-surgery.

To follow up, I received my MRI results today. I'm betting surgery, but I follow-up with the ortho next week.

Wear the tennis elbow brace when using your arm. That helps reduce the stress on the tendon where the inflammation is. Lay off doing anything strenuous for a while. It will heal in a few months. I get it on occasion. The last time was right after a rifle training class handing a 15# rifle for days on end with my right hand.

I have dealt with it off/on for 30 years. when mine flares up, i use a strap support. it'll let you keep working and reduce stress on it so it will heal faster. Rest and advil work well. mine will go 2-3 years without flaring up sometimes, but when it does, the strap is the ticket.

Well it's surgery next on the 31st for me. I understand it's a pretty intense recovery and therapy regimen, so with the job and all, there's no better time to do it than now.

Best of luck with the surgery and speedy recovery. Talk to your surgeon during the follow up process when they write the script for therapy to recommend a therapy group in your area who deal with sports med injuries. When you start therapy ask a lot of questions and get the go-ahead as to what they will allow you to do at home on your own. This will advance the healing process and get you 'over the hump'.

Sorry for my delayed reply, but I appreciate you chiming in. I'll check with the doc and the PT team. Thanks!

I call mine "5-speed Elbow."

After driving a 5-speed F150 for 20 years now, I definitely have 5-Speed Elbow in my "left" elbow only.

I feel it daily, and if I sleep on my left side, Wow!
The morning is tough!

I’m 42 also and I started dealing with this June 2019. Took about 8 months to heal and I was a moron one day at the gym thinking I was still in my twenties and it flared back up with a vengeance. All of my ortho buddies said pretty much the same thing...rest, ice, NSAIDS, wearing the arm band, maybe some PT, and don’t have surgery. Personally I ice it after workouts and similar activities and apply heat in the morning to loosen it up. It heals, but it’s a slow process.

Surgery went well yesterday morning. Doc didn't do a nerve block so I'm fairly sore, but not unbearably so. This cast will get old with a quickness, though... actually, it already is.

Just wait until it's shower time. I wrapped a plastic bag around mine and duct taped it closed. Many other things you will realize over the next few days. Here's to a quick recovery.
