... Just found out this will be my last year on my present lease. This is our twenty fourth year. My babies grew up on this ranch. I guess nothing lasts forever.

I can relate to loosing a lease after 24 years...very hard to leave. However I did find a fair lease that I have been on for 30 years now....developed it into a real good place. Now I may loose this one soon. I thought when I loose this one it will be over for me..I will just start fishing as I don't think I can afford the high prices that leases are going for.

I've been there too and know the feeling. But those memories are the kind that stick with you and might inspire you to find another great place.

And at least you got a fair amount of notice and you can plan and take your time taking your stuff off. Not everyone gets that.

Man that's tough and hope you take the best buck to date off the place this year. Good luck on finding your next place

Thank you for the words of encouragement, they mean a bunch. And yes, there are a ton of memories, boxes full of pictures and antlers on the wall. And the satisfaction of managing a ranch when no one thought it could be done. Finding places to hunt isn't difficult, the hard part is the relationship that is grown between men who say what they mean, and mean what they say. And a hand shake is a stronger bond than any signed paper. I have been blessed to walk some amazing country, but ole Bill is gonna be hard to replace, he is a good man...

Time for a new chapter in life.

I sympathize with you, we are in a similar type situation. I am at peace with it, but 26 years of memories are gonna be hard to forget.

Still, look towards the future and all that it can hold

For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.

At least you found out before the season. I hunted near junction for 20 years, since I was 8. Found out in February (2008) that we wouldn’t be renewed. My last hunt I was by myself and saw a big 10 with split brows and split G2s. Was Sunday morning and I had stuff to do at home, no one to help load, clean or share the memory with. If I would’ve known it would be the last hunt on a place I learned how to hunt on I would’ve taken the deer after watching him for 45 minutes.

Hopefully it’s the best season and you take in all the great memories you’ve made there. Those will stick with you after the lease is gone.

So true. Sometimes it's our resistance to change that makes us miss out on some great opportunities.

And then, there's also the saying to "always be ready for a fastball in the dirt."

Hate to hear you are loosing that lease. We had a ranch leased for 32 years, I and all of my cousins grew up on it. We had been told so many times over the years it was the last year, we didn't take it too seriously that year that actually did become the last year. Really took the heart out of my granddad.

But to these quoted points, that's when I started guiding for the Texas Youth Hunting Program, and though to be honest it took a lot of perspective adjustment on my part, I grew to love that camaraderie as much as what we had on the lease.

So have a great last season and look forward to what's next!

I gave up on leases years ago. All the effort, time, money and miles driven only to find out that next year your out. WTF?

Have always followed land owner rules and respectful of land and everything else. Better to go on guided hunts money better spent.
