My buddy and I are kicking the idea around of a Texas Dall sheep hunt. Has anyone been on one of these? My neighbor on my south side of my ranch high fenced his 168 acre and has 11 of them on his place. My concern is these are so tame they bed down in the SE corner every night. My wife and I take the mule and drive around the outside of fence on some evening looking to see what critters are out. She can darn near walk up t the fence about two yards away and they just look at her. I'm sure it's different where you hunt be these are way to tame for us. If we decide to hunt these we want to work for our animal and not shoot ranch pets.

Anyone ever been on a Texas Dall sheep hunt and were the sheep truly wild like most wild animals?

Thanks

most are not exactly "wild" as you have noted. Depending on ranch and hunting pressure they can be tricky to stalk with a bow and I've had a few nice stalks as such, but with a rifle most don't tend to be too challenging.

My Texas Dall hunt was not difficult on rifle hunt. If I had been bow hunting it might have been harder, but I won't lie...it wasn't too difficult. [Linked Image]

Nice looking ram, thanks for your feedback and honesty. Pretty much was I was expecting. BTW, where did you hunt and how many days should we plan for a hunt?

They're a little more challenging as an archery hunt. That's what I would recommend.

That was almost 15 years ago and was down at the Crider Ranch outside of Leakey. My hunt took one evening and the next morning I was done. But I think the guide knew their pattern and we went to the right blind at the right time.
I think it'll all depend on where you're hunting and the pattern of the animals.

If you want a harder hunt go for Mouflon or Urial.

Yep. Took one as an add on to a hog hunt once. Not too difficult of a hunt. Doubt I would shoot another one.

I took this one in September 2014 at the 4 Amigos Ranch in Eagle Pass. We did a spot and stalk that wasn't too difficult. I took him at 175 yards.

Yes but I would not call it a hunt.

Do your homework, there are many factors contributing to a challenging, hard ,or demanding hunt, sheep are stupid all over the world!
Some may live in the most inhospitable terrain in the world, or on a 500 acre high fenced ranch. Corsican sheep, and the color variations are fun to hunt, a description i would give to most of the exotics available for hunting. There are many ranches offering a great hunting experience, and the best hunts consistency come from the ranches with the experience to manage a ranch for hunting clients to get the most out of.
With that said there are ranches unfortunately that just don't deliver on these points, and I might add for the money its hard to find prettier sheep anywhere, it sure beats the hell out of a desert big horn's budget!
Get out and go hunt yourself a Texas Dall.

It will be borderline challenging if you use a pocket knife. Unfair advantage if you’re holding a feed bucket.
