I was always traditionally a trend bucker. When everyone was throwing Shimano i was throwing Abu. They shot Leupold I shot Redfield. They loaded up with Winchester i stuck with Hornady ( this was years ago before hornady blew up ). Mathews bow's and rages? Hell no i'll stick with Bowtech and Rocket heads. Didn't think the other products didn't work, but too many people liked them and i felt that made it undesirable, to go with the popular wave. I'm starting to turn over most of my gear, buy better hunting specific clothing( had to go with firstlite...Kuiu is just too mainstream ) , better foot wear, optics, and shooting equipment. Had to admit to myself i did miss out on some things due to hardheadedness. My Mathews bow is the smoothest bow I've ever shot, should have gone with them years ago. Our technology is incredible now in regards to hunting and shooting equipment.
For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.

I don’t follow trends as much as real world reviews. I buy for what I need, not what someone else needs or is plugging. I spend a lot of time on research and thought before buying gear. Sad but true. I can’t help that I am researcher, it’s just in my blood

I enjoy researching what's new but always do my best to sanity check to see if a purchase makes good business sense. My overall goal is to determine if something is a true need or just a want.
Between YouTube and online reviews, consumers have never had more information available to them when deciding when or if to spend their money.
I will add that once I retired, I realized the value of deer meat no longer justified what I was spending on it in terms of time and money.

If I follow a trend it's because that trend is a better product or idea than what was previously used. GoreTex is a great example. When that stuff first hit the market, there was no doubt it was a better product than all of the other rainwear and I couldn't wait to get my hands on some.
Silver spurs and gold tequila keep me hanging on. Pretty girls and old cantinas give me shelter from the storm.

I would guess that for 98% of Texas Hunters, the meat is a bonus, about like the horns are for most people. If i was told i could never eat another piece of deer meat again it wouldn't stop me from hunting. We buy no beef, only what we kill or slaughter ourselves, but its not why i hunt.

I do not own a 6.5, nor do I wear white sunglasses or own a P/U with tires outside the wheel wells. I can get some attention in my overalls and love my clip on watches.

It's a personal choice for sure. I openly admitted when I was working that hunting was the best form of "therapy". I still enjoy it for sure but found I no longer need it as often.

I buy what I like when I need it. I read reviews but lean more to real world experience from friends. It is not so much of bucking the trend but just keeping with what is or has been working for me. Why switch from what I know has worked for me all these years. I will upgrade when what I have been using is not made anymore.

Well, I have a 260, but bought it because my buddy sold it real cheap. Probably should have just stuck with my 270, which does everything the 260 does, and does it better. I still like the 260 though. I am not a trend follower, unless the trend in question is a real good idea. Tikka, for instance, was something sort of trendy, but for all the right reasons. But, I’ve recently parked the Tikka 260 and gone with the Sako 270. As good as the Tikka feels, the Sako feels better.
I did buy a couple of Vortex Viper FFP scopes back when everybody was raving about them, just to see what the hubbub was all about. Then everyone quit Vortex and bad mouthed them and went on to other scopes. In retrospect, they weren’t good as people originally said, nor were they as bad as people later said.
I had Leica binoculars before most of you did, so I was ahead of that trend. Boy howdy, that was a good buy.

Not into trends except I put a deer feeder about 20 years ago.

i bought a Vortex back in 2014 when they were all the rage. Its a ok scope but i still don't see what all the hoopala was about.

I still like and use the Viper PST 4-16 FFP, but have parked the 6-24. I have killed a lot of deer and pigs with that 4-16, and really do like it. If it just had a more useful reticle illumination, it would be a great scope. The glass is Ok, but not great.
The trend would now push me to Nightforce, but what I have on the rifles at present are good enough.

I work hard for my money and I like nice things. Sometimes those things are trendy (I do own a creedmoor) and sometimes they're not (older Bowtech Assassin)
Both of these shoots lights out for me and that's what I'll roll with

For hunting and fishing I don't replace things that work unless I need something better, on the other hand for my woodworking habit, I was always looking at the latest gadget, but buying was only after I have convinced myself it would either save me time or make the end project better, My fishing and hunting gear mostly date back prior to the 1970's.

Both. I own a 6.5 and a .308. I hunt with an AR, a BAR, and multiple bolts and levers. I don't use scent lock, but I do use thermacell. I don't follow trends because they are trendy...however, if a trend is a good product, and serves a good purpose, yea, I'll buy it and use it.

Another great example of something that is both a trend and a clearly better product.

World class Luddite that I am, trends are something that I sometimes notice from afar.
Forty years ago, if I wasn't killing my deer on the wrong side of 400 yards I didn't think I was accomplishing anything. No longer.
Today, most of my hunting gets done with iron sights, often with rifles with twin barrels. Cast bullets get launched an awful lot of the time. My shooting distances are, of necessity, on the short side. My emphasis is on the hunting; shooting is merely an adjunct to that.
I do what I do. Can't say that I "follow" or "buck" trends...or would even recognize one if I saw one.

I am missing no longer having a .375H&H. Not because I have a use for it, but because it's a helluva round...brought to market in 1912. 'Still want a Winchester in .38-55, but can't justify it. I own two 7X57's and I'm constantly telling myself that I need to hunt with at least one of them. That round came out in 1892, and, according to www.americanrifleman.org, "...is the oldest cartridge designed for smokeless powder that still retains a following." I will have a 6.5X55 Swede before I die, unless God has other, more immediate plans for me. (Caliber - 1891...which doesn't jive with the above claim from American Rifleman ). I dearly love both .243s I own. (1955) My "cutting edge" rifle, as you know, is a .280 Rem. (1957) I'm hoping to someday see something I like from the last quarter of the 20th century.

I don't care if something is a trend or not. It just has to work for me.
