This is grandmas gun, it was passed to me for cleaning/safe keeping to eventually pass down to my younger sister once she settles down. What I'm looking for is info on if this was a factory engraving job (I'm guessing not) , if not, is there any way to find out where it was done, or get some pedigree on this thing. It's chambered in 38sw, I know it came from a gun auction in the late 80's early 90's. But the family member that got it for granny passed several years back. Any info is greatly appreciated, thanks.

I've emailed smith before with good results. Not super fast but not too bad either.

This is a good idea. Also, Smith has a forum like this one with many knowledgeable members. You might post there and get some help. Good luck!

If you ever come down this way, I have some 38 SW ammo that you're welcome to. About 45 rounds. Just north of San Antonio.

I have family in Austin, I'll definitely reach out next time I'm in the area

As stated above, Smith & Wesson has a forum dedicated to their pistols and there are LOTS of knowledgeable people there. For a quick answer I would post there. For the final word though, I would email S&W. They should have record of what the gun looked like when it shipped and to whom they shipped it. Good luck! That's a very fine pistol you have there.
