Anybody drove a 2020 model Ram 4x4 with the 3rd gen EcoDiesel engine? My son just bought a '20 model Crew 4x4 and it loafs up and down HWY 75 getting 30.3 mpg at 72 mph. If you don't mind let's save the Ford/Chev/Dodge BS that usually ensues, as I've owned them all, but am curious about this specific truck and engine. Thanks, and please keep in mind I'm referring to the NEW 3rd generation ecodiesel introduced for 2020 model year.

Have a 2015, owner since new 90,000 miles zero issues. Over 30 at 70 mph is probably a little optimistic... but not much.

It’s not a speed demon and it’s not an HD diesel but it darn sure does a 1/2 to. Pickup job and gets small car mileage.

I had a 2015. It left me stranded twice. It had emission systems issues. I liked the truck when it worked. I know some didn't have problems and other like me did. Maybe they got the kinks worked out. I traded mine. I think it's a good engine. Just burdened with too much exhaust inhibitors for it to run like it should.

Just saying don’t expect to set the cruise on 70 and get 30 mpg it won’t happen. Head wind will stop it rain will stop it non pure hwy will stop it. If the computer is saying 30 figure on 28-29 being the truth. Not nocking it at all love mine to death.

He's done it multiple times. I'm not guessing, you are. He also knows how to do math.....hand calculate his mileage. He can set it on 70 and run 13-1400 rpms. I've also driven enough to know how head wind and tail wind affect such things. My '19 GMC Sierra Crew 4x4 will get 22-23mpg with a tail wind at 70mph. I know how to do math too.

Sounds like Ram got it right on this model.

You'd be wrong as well. What part of "he's already done it multiple times" that is hard to understand?

Pretty impressive. That's more HP and torque than my 01 7.3 and WAY better fuel efficiency.

Here ya go, a little unbiased.

https://news.pickuptrucks.com/2019/12/2020-ram-1500-ecodiesel-mpg-report-after-900-miles.html

The MPG Results
Over the 901.7-mile round trip, unloaded, the Ram used 36.112 gallons of diesel fuel for a calculated average of 25.0 mpg. The truck's trip computer showed an average of 23.8 mpg, which was surprisingly lower than our observed mpg for this test. Both figures, however, fell short of the EcoDiesel's highway number, which was disappointing considering that the route was composed of nearly all highway miles. There are a few reasons that might explain this.

The 900 miles weren't flat and came with a lot of elevation change, from Los Angeles at sea level to Zion at 3,000 feet above sea level, plus you have climb over mountains to get there. Additionally, though the truck didn't keep track of average speed, it would have been quite high for this route considering raised speed limits in parts of Arizona and Utah where the Ram just isn't as efficient above 70 mph.

I would be remiss to conclude without mentioning that a gussied-up Ram 1500 Longhorn with the diesel engine is a near perfect companion for a long road trip. The interior is fantastic and comfortable, and with the 33-gallon tank I did about 600 miles on the first tank alone and could have gone farther. And, it is quiet. There's some diesel growl when accelerating, but while cruising the noise vanishes and the cabin is impressively serene for a pickup. The EcoDiesel may not have reached its lofty EPA fuel economy estimate in my test, but it certainly made a big fan out of me.

The 2020 Ram 1500's Fuel Economy Is Drastically Worse Than Advertised

I actually read that report

Quote
That the 2020 Ram 1500 Rebel EcoDiesel returned 24 mpg in our 75-mph highway fuel-economy test is remarkable by itself. But when considered against the 18 mpg returned by its counterpart, the Ram 1500 Rebel equipped with a gasoline-burning 5.7-liter Hemi V-8, the diesel is truly compelling. Its fuel-economy number, however, comes with at least one caveat. Both trucks we tested were all-wheel-drive Rebel off-road models with the same final-drive ratios, tires, and cab and bed configurations. But despite Fiat Chrysler's bold insistence that the EcoDiesel will be on sale before the end of the year, it has not yet received EPA emissions certification. The EPA's fuel-economy estimates are still forthcoming as well. Put simply, there's no way to know if the engine calibration we tested here will be the one Ram will eventually sell.

Get back to me when you find a road test like the one Hancock cited (not written by Ram by the way) specifically on the 3.21 rear end, as I was referring to, and 70mph as I was mentioning referring to my son's actual mpg. Feel free to browse through this forum and you will find multiple examples of 30mpg as well, or you can stay out in left field.

If you’re so sure, why don’t you just go buy one?

I don’t know how everyone gets 20-25+ mpg in a truck. Hell I can’t get over 12.5 in mine. Well I can going down hill and reset my mileage calculator I get like 35 mpg until I touch the pedal again rofl

Not saying he cant not saying it won’t. I’ve done it myself. I’ve done as good as 32 mpg hand calculated over a tank with over 800 miles on one 26 gal fill up. It’s just not an every day thing. Mine is deleted and tuned for economy it gets better mileage than your sons.

I sorry your taking it the wrong way, I like mine very much glad I bought it 5 years ago. All I’m saying is if you drive it back and forth to work your not going to get 30 mpg unless you hypermile the hell out of it or have a 50 mph flat no stop sign commute.

I say buy one I’ve loved mine and all I’ve done is fluid and filter changes.
