It’s been a while since I shared a project on here start to finish. This one is going to be a 24”x40” barn door stick burner that will be auctioned at the Kannonball Memorial golf tourney in Jacksboro. All of the plate is 1/4”. It will have dual slide out grates, a pull out ash tray in the cook chamber for grilling, and heavy duty casters.

This afternoon I got all of the cad work done. It’s going to take up exactly 2 5x10 sheets.

This will be cool! That CAD drawing is a mess. Does it lay out the best pattern for you or do you get to play Tetris?

It is amazing what a computer can put on a sheet of metal. We used to cut pancake slip blinds by hand, using a torch or sawing them. We got really busy and sent the plate to a water cut shop to help catch up. They cut two to three times as many from the same amount of material, with no de-burring required and everything right to size.
Are you using plasma or water cut? Either way the precision a machine can cut is amazing. Looking forward to the finished smoker.

Wade - it has a nesting feature to get it as efficient as possible. Most of the time it works great, but on that second sheet I was able to rework it and fit a 27” circle on that sheet for a different project.

Rabbit - it’s a plasma table, water jet is big money and lots of maintenance. When we need to go more detailed I have a buddy who can laser cut anything I need.

Gonna be nice. I will be sure and inspect it for defects between beers. Are you bringing it up and hanging out?

Nice setup you have there. I have inspected machine work and cut parts at many places before I retired. Have seen laser, gas torch, plasma and water cut and they all impressed me. At one machine shop they had a Wire Cut EDM CNC machine, it was simply amazing the accuracy it could get. At another shop watching some 4" carbon steel plate being cut that I thought would be too thick. I was wrong, it cut it like butter. I agree with you on the maintenance on the water cut stuff, the powdered garnet is very abrasive and the pressure the pumps put up is way up there. Can't wait to see this project come together.

I got to witness the fabrication process of some electrical switchgear & Motor Control Centers that I was responsible for. They used a big fancy super duper laser machine and that thing was awesome. Hard to believe how fast, accurate, & clean it was.

Firebox is done minus the 5/16” rod and spring handles for the damper and the latch. It’s hot so I’m quitting, might tackle the smoke chamber in the morning.
