Thinking about switching to them . Anyone know of any better out there and maybe pro's and con's of using timed protein feeder. Wanting deer to utilize browse more and come out to eat protein in the daylight.

If all your feeders are timed, that might work.

Lamco timed protein - unmatched trough design

Pro's - lower feed bill, multiple animals can eat at once, and easy to plan refill trips based on amount you throw per day

Con's - feed not available at all times and feed can get wet if it sits in the trough for too long

Pretty much sums it up. If you are in a light density area, lack of utilization Will cause the trough to cake up. They do have a rain sensor that works good.

There is one timed Lamco protein feeder in the classifieds now. They work good for what they are designed to do. They did offer a rain sensor to keep the feeder from feeding when it was raining. Would not help if it rained after it fed though. I put 25 timered American Hunter trough feeders on a larger South Texas ranch once to try to make the deer feed during the day. The mature bucks just would not feed during the daytime due to the heat down there. So I fed from March 1st till Sept 1st from sundown till daylight...I fed multiple times during the night for varied run time lengths depending on the amount of deer eating at each feed location. Some feeders did not feed 5 lbs/day while some fed 60 lbs/day depending on rainfall. So it was basically free choice in antler growing and fawning season. From Sept 1st till March 1st I fed twice in the morning and twice in the evenings all in the daylight hours. It worked better doing this feeding than trying to feed year round during the daylight. I was inconstantly having to adjust in the antler growing months due to rainfall or lack of it. The American Hunter feeder had a lot of trough space but did not have the rain sensor. If I hit a rainy period for a week or two that made it difficult to get to the feeders, it was a mess to clean up. Today that ranch feeds free choice from March 1st till Sept 1st. Then switches to timered trough feeders made by Priefert..they are expensive but you can set the time to open and how long to leave open till you want it to close. They leave them open from daylight till dark during hunting season. They have rain sensors to shut the feeder..they work in heavy fog to light drizzle. As soon as it stops or clears they open up. The deer have learned to use them and they work very well for what they want them to do. They are battery powered with a solar panel. I think they are 1000 lb capacity and they are not cheap. They are well made also. They mature bucks will still sometimes not move during the daytime hours till the rut gets closer or starts...rainfall really place a huge part. They have pretty good habitat and work on improving it every year.

If you feed from the end of hunting season up to say, September 1st, what does it matter if they come during the day? I just don't get it.

Probably didn’t want to have to double of on feeder cost having both free and timed.

I like timed during season.

Got two Ranch Kings that I love. Don't have rain sensors, but like mentioned don't help if it rains after it feeds. Have worked like a champ for the last 2 years.
