The U.S. Navy said that at least one fire continues to burn aboard the USS Bonhomme Richard, as progress is being made in extinguishing the fire that has raged in San Diego's harbor since Sunday morning.

A defense official told ABC News that as of Tuesday evening the fire was 80% contained.

Defense officials acknowledged that the fire has caused serious damage aboard the ship and that they face tough decisions about the ship's future, including whether the ship will be able to continue in service.

"The ship is stable and the structure is safe," said Rear Adm. Philip Sobeck, the commander of Expeditionary Strike Group 3 said at a news conference Tuesday in San Diego to update the efforts to extinguish the blaze.

After this fire is "finished" I think the Navy will need a new Carrier.

I am an Air Force guy but have been on a couple ships and I do not understand why it is still burning. Maybe one of our Navy brethren can help shed some light.

Sounds simple to me. Close some doors to shut off oxygen supply or put lots more water on it. confused2 But again I am just a fly boy and not a seamen.

The fire suppression system was taken down for the renovation There was also a minimal crew on board with passage ways all open for worker access.

It's my understanding that this ship is an amphibious assault ship. Correct me if I'm wrong.

I had no clue but from the pic with all of the smoke it looked like a carrier", but you are correct it isn't a carrier. In Army terms it is a ."boat"/ LOL

I think its carrying about a million gallons of fuel. They want to keep it from being leaked into the ocean

To fix all the wireing will cost almost as much as a new boat. Take her out and sink it. Make good fish habitat.

An amphibious assault ship is a type of amphibious warfare ship employed to land and support ground forces on enemy territory by an amphibious assault vehicles . The design evolved from aircraft carriers converted for use as helicopter carriers.

You might as well call it a carrier the Bonhomme Richard was being modified to carry F35's.

Bon Homme Richard is not a carrier. It is an LHD which is the designation for a large amphibious assault ship. A carrier has the designation of CVN and is more than 200 feet longer that LHDs.
